Published

I'm repplying for the PMHNP speciality and did not see a thread created so I figured I'd do it again! With the deadline passed, good luck to everyone who applied!

I just got in off the waitlist! 90% sure I will be committing ??

Congrats! Did you apply for the ABSN or combined ABSN+MSN? I’m also waitlisted and applied only ABSN. Also, what time did you receive the notification?

Thank you! I got in for the combined ABSN/MSN. I got the email around 8:15 PM tonight to check my application status!

Hi All! I was previously waitlisted and just received an admissions offer from Penn a few days ago. I got into the Accelerated BSN/MSN PMHNP specialty. I’m from San Francisco and am trying to decide between Penn and UCLA’s MECN program. While I prefer Penn as it offers me my end goal of becoming a PMHNP, it is all the way across the country and as a mom with kids, I have a lot of external factors to consider in such a short amount of time. UCLA is enticing because I’m very familiar with LA, it’s close by, and have family there, but their program will only be a stepping stone to my end goal.

Trying to weigh these options to see what would be best for me and my family. I am not familiar with the school districts near Penn. Can anyone who live in Philly share some insight around this? Which schools/districts are the best? Which neighborhoods are good for families?

Hi! So I don't have kids but this is what I remember from friends with kids: Generally the best school districts are around "the Mainline." Bryn Mawr/Wayne. That area. I would normally tell someone it's quite expensive, but I'm from the LA area too (Orange County) and the prices there have nothing on what we have going on in SoCal. haha. Mt. Airy is also a super cute family oriented place. I think people up there tend to send their kids to private schools? I'm guessing on that one. If you want to talk to a program alum with kids, I'm happy to put you in touch with someone. There were several in my MSN portion.

Do you know at what point we apply for HRSA scholarships if we are interested?  Is this something we apply to before we start a nursing program, or once we graduate?  I found the website to be confusing...

Oops. I can't find my reply for this so I'm replying again just in case I didn't. ? (Sorry if I didn't.) There are two different ways you can use HRSA. You apply for the scholarship immediately. But you apply for loan repayment after you graduate. If you are able to relocate after school, I personally would do the scholarship. The thing with the scholarship is it's a commitment for the future. They pay for everything and you commit to X amount of months at a center that qualifies as soon as you graduate.
Whereas HRSA loan repayment you can apply to once you have a job that you know qualifies. But be careful. They are SUPER picky. Just because you work in a place with a high HPSA (Health Professional Shortage Area) score, it does not mean you'll get it. And a lot of places that you would think qualify, don't. I worked at free clinics for uninsured/undocumented patients, but because the institution didn't qualify for HRSA, I didn't.  It's quite tricky. I feel like it's how they weed people out. haha. My friends went through a lot to get the HRSA loan forgiveness. (Also, it's on a cycle, not rolling.)

Thank you so much for the helpful info! Yes, please put me in touch with your friends. It would be so helpful to speak with someone who has experience around this. Is there anyway I could provide you my email in a private message somewhere here?

Sure. You should be able to DM me. I’ve gotten messages on here before. I’ll reach out to more than one classmate so you can hopefully get some diversity in opinions.

Received notice of acceptance off the waitlist last week (woohoo) and wondering if any one else who’s newly accepted has received any FinAid info yet? Also can anyone (current or attending soon) speak to what’s typical for aid from Penn?

Hi Everyone!

I was accepted into the MSN-FNP program! I am so excited to meet everyone ! Anyone have any suggestions of where to live and where to avoid? Haha I am from mid-west Ohio, so I am not familiar with Philly!

My husband and I currently live in south Philly but are currently looking to move closer to campus so either Center City West (25-30 min walk from campus) or around Powellton Village (less than a mile from campus and very walkable).

Hello! I was wondering what your stats were when you applied and how you're liking the program now? Thanks!
