UofA Nursing students: 2010-2011

Published

Has anyone else received their acceptance to UofA nursing yet? I got my letter a few months ago for the After Degree program starting in January and I'm pretty excited. I'm moving to Edmonton from Victoria and really looking forward to a change of pace and meeting some fellow nursing students.

I know there are some negative opinions about this program but please don't put them here. I've already weighed all of it and UofA still seems like the best fit for me personally. That being said, has anyone personally had a great experience with this program and the CBL style? I think it sounds more interesting than the traditional lecture drone, even if it is more work intensive.

Hey!

I've been lurking around this site for a while, but your post made me decide to finally register!

I got my acceptance to the After Degree program a while back, but I'll be starting in September at the Edmonton campus. I'll ALSO be relocating to Edmonton from Victoria (with my first home being Calgary).

I'm STOKED to start classes, and I'm very interested to see how the CBL learning plays out. From what I've heard from friends in Medical programs with content delivery like this, material is much easier to remember, and you gain a great deal of camaraderie with your group mates.

I'm planning on getting as involved as possible with the Nursing Student's Association and the SU in general, something I sadly missed in my first degree, so hopefully I'll see you there!

Best,

Paul

Congrats on your acceptances and good luck with the CBL program.

There've been some interesting threads/discussions on these forums about the U of A program and CBL style leanring you should check out.

Best of luck with your studies.

cheers :)

Thanks!

Personally I think that education has more to do with the student than the content delivery... your education experience is what you make of it. My general rule of thumb is to prepare for the worst, and then do your best to improve on it.

I applied at U of C as well, but ultimately decided to give U of A a shot for diversity's sake as I attended UCalgary for my first degree... Great facility though!

This exactly. I totally agree. During my undergrad we had a few courses structured like CBL and I found it so much more interesting to research subjects and also much easier to remember the 'scenario' versus strict memorization.

Did you find admissions...interesting at all? I've been wondering what's going on with my admission. I talked to one of the nursing admissions advisers before I applied and she mentioned it would be late summer at the earliest before winter 2011 letters were sent out. I applied back in March and they somehow admitted me to fall 2010 which messed everything up a bit. My course registration date was therefore in April but all the courses I have to register for starting in winter are still closed... Anyway I'm officially starting in January and I'm sure we'll get to know one another at some point.

Well I'm definitely glad to have found a few fellow UofA students. I also considered UofC and received admission to ULeth but couldn't make the fall start work because I couldn't complete a missing Anat credit on time. Overall I think Edmonton is a great city, and a few of my friends are currently attending UofA. It sounds like hard work but a lot of fun at the same time, and UofA is a great school. Can't wait to start!

I am still waiting to hear about acceptance to the U of A after degree program for winter 2011. I applied 2 months ago and haven't heard anything. Bear tracks still says my transcripts are 'initiated'. Does anyone know how long this process takes? Did anyone else have a long registration process?

Hey Percy, I talked to the student advisor for Nursing way back in April/May and she said they probably won't start sending out acceptance letters until 'late summer' so you're probably fine. You could call her and ask if you're unsure though; she seemed pretty friendly.

My application got mixed in with the fall ones so I received my admission in April but I'm thinking I am the only one because all the courses are still closed to registration.

Have you sent both high school and University transcripts? Mine took about 1-2 weeks to arrive so you might want to double check if they have actually received them because when they do, the to do list will say completed.

good luck!

Thanks for your reply!

I will call ****** and see if they have received anything yet. They received most of my transcripts... just not one of them that has one of the prerequisites required. It seems like a long time to get a transcript to me. Hopefully I'll be able to sort it out soon.

Hi, I'm new to this forum but admittedly lurking for a few months. Anyways, almost a year of gathering the necessary prerequisites for some nursing schools, I have decided on UofA since my family lives in Edmonton and it would just be cheaper for me overall. Since, the past year UofA has changed its requirements so I'm taking Microbiology this January and applying to UofA for entry next fall.

I'm just wondering if it is really a competitive program to get into. I know that when I spoke to BCIT about their nursing program they said that they recieve about 600 applicants and only admit about 90 or so students. Im just wondering if I should expect the same for UofA as well.

I believe it is somewhat competitive. The UofA website has a link for statistics on its Registrar page where you can look up the number of applicants and number accepted for in province, out of province, etc.

My tip would be to apply as early as possible because they offer early admission if you meet a certain gpa cutoff.

Good luck!

Im just going to go to one of their info sessions this coming month and just ask away.
