UNLV, budget issues, nursing schools

Published

It is a horrible idea to cut or close down ANY program of any school, but articles like this, just irritates me. Media always says, Nevada's nursing shortage, yada yada...yada. Really? then where are the jobs?

There's only two categories now for most practicing nurses, they are: unemployed or underemployed (pick one) For new grads, it's usually unemployed!

This proves it then, NO ONE is safe even the big kahuna!

UNLV gets most of the money anyway, maybe it's time they gave back to the state. The nursing program is not immune, no one is. I hope things get better, even if people get their RN degree here, theyd still have to move. NO JOBS. (sigh)

Maybe they could get a new dean, more in touch with the current economic climate for new grad nurses. Wouldn't make up the huge shortfall but it will help.

I understand the lure of coming to school here. The truth is, Nevada doesn't really have much to offer now. Honestly, why would anyone decide to move here? Looking for jobs is like looking for a needle in a haystack! Even the fast food businesses are hardly hiring. Even if you get your RN license here, so what? Ya still have to move! Nevada keeps on saying 'nursing shortage' - hello? they can't even keep their OWN new grads in the state!

Baker1bv, a new dean won't help either. It's just going to get worse.

People from out of state just come here to go to school then, they usually go back to their states. But it is a bad deal for locals who want to stay. Even before the crisis, most of nv graduates leave. It just got worse that's all. It will be a long time, before it gets better!

Yeap, I've heard about the shortage, and the budget cut, but California has already enforced all its budget cuts. Programs had been cut. My plan was to start nursing school this Spring 2010, but I all the Universities were canceled!!!... Ruined all the plans and efforts I have done!..

I'm glad it happened though, b/c then I would have never thought about UNLV! with their perfect 16 months accelerated program, I couldn't ask for anything better!! it's a nice school too! =)

Im from Cali and will be going to UNLV for the program. And I guess with all these issues, I'll probably want my license in Cali as well.. Hopefully by next year, everything gets better. I saw some scholarships that gives you money for College, as long as you promise to work Fulltime for 2 years in Vegas?!!...

Goodluck, UNLV's nursing program is safe. They'll just exist with a lot less money and students, that's all.

Different hospitals have different programs but the basic idea is they will loan you money, if you complete the 2 year or whatever length requirement the loan is forgiven. It doesn't guarantee you a job. Several people in my class had the st rose college to career program but either just started or havent started.

I heard some students talking at CSN saying that tuition is going to rise 20%. Is there any truth to this?

Inn all likelihood, nursing program costs throughout the state will rise.
