University of Wisconsin Nurse Residency Program 2015

Hello! I didn't see one of these for the coming year. I figured I would start one to get a conversation going about it!

I applied for the UW Madison Nurse Residency Program for the January 2015 start. I'll be a December 2014 graduate with a BSN. Is anyone else applying for this Nurse Residency program or have applied/went through the program in the past? I'm very interested in what you have to say about the interviewing process and the program itself.

I just had the phone interview and turned in my references. Hope to get a face-to-face interview soon. They said those that will be getting a job offer will be notified hopefully by Thanksgiving holiday. Fingers crossed!

Hi kriggs19,

I applied a few days ago and have not heard anything back yet.

Do you mind me asking when you applied? How long from when you applied and heard back about the interview?

I also graduate December 2014 and applied for the UW Hospitals & Clinics Residency Program.

I am so happy for you. I think you're pretty much in :)

I applied on a Sunday and heard back via email by Tuesday morning. It was a very quick response! From other students I know that applied for the Summer start had the same quick response!

They email to have you call the recruiter to set up a time for a phone interview. The whole process between applying, phone interview, and references took a little less than 2 weeks.

Good luck! Keep me posted on your progress!

What clinical areas are you interested in?

Livelovelearn14, I can't private message so I will respond on here for you.

Have you ever applied for a CNA position or a student nurse internship/externship/residency program? It's the same type questions. Mostly behavioral. She's very nice, but I was still nervous! Haha. I think it is because I know how big of a deal a phone interview can be for stuff like this. I really prefer in person so I can gauge people when I'm talking.

Keep me posted on how it goes! I wonder when they plan to start scheduling in person interviews. I'm very curious. It must be very soon. I would guess end of October to early November based on when they want to extend job offers.

Fingers crossed for the both of us! Good luck!

Hi kriggs19,

I have a phone interview set up. So that's pretty exciting!

Do you know for sure if in-person interviews are going to happen? I hope the phone interview may be enough.

I'm interested in lots of units. Particularly med-surg, ED, and OR. What about you?

Did your interview last for more than 30 minutes?

That's awesome! I'm not entirely sure. Deadline is the 15th so I'm assuming shortly after that. They did say they will call people for in-person interviews before extending job offers.

I'm a NICU and pediatrics person. I'm really hoping for NICU though since they just built that brand-new level 4 NICU. Fingers crossed! I did put a few adults units down, but if I'm forced to work with adults (lol) I will want to be in the ICU setting. We'll see!

The interview was about 30 minutes long. Pretty quick and painless. Good luck!

Kriggs19,

Thanks for the response. I am a little nervous for the phone interview, but I know to just be myself and do some preparation so that I feel more confident during the interview.

I really hope you get NICU or peds. I am not a pediatrics person. I prefer working with adults :)

It is probably a good thing that they meet people face-to-face before hiring anyone. That way we can see if the organization and unit is also a good fit for us. It just requires me to fly out there, which is a bit of a challenge with my current schedule, but I will make it work. I REALLY want to work for UW!

Best of luck. I'll keep you posted :)

Livelovelearn14,

In response to your most recent PM....

I had to leave her a message as well. She called back the following morning. Hopefully I know if I get an in person interview or not. The wait is killing me!

I am NICU and pediatrics mostly. My adult units are critical care areas like neuro and burns. I don't like working with adults much at all unless its ICU type environments.

I don't know anyone in the program personally. A girl that graduated the semester ahead of me is In the neuro icu there. I heard from my professors that gave me my references that she really likes it there.

kriggs19, I just peeked back into this thread and didn't know that you've been replying here lol! I was receiving your msgs in my inbox. I finally got my phone interview date set up! cnoel, I am the same as you--I love my adults but I liked interacting with kids too.

livelovelearn14,

That's odd. It kept telling me they wouldn't send because don't have enough quality posts or something.

That's exciting! I am seriously going crazy waiting to hear back from them. Hopefully they will let people know one way or the other. I'm glad I have access to a few other people that applied to the program so I can know when people start getting calls.

Is anyone applying to other nurse residency programs? If so, where at?

Ok, so i literally just completed the phone interview and I have to say that I honestly don't know how i feel about how it went. Probably could've done much better. kriggs19, did you receive the link for the references on the same day? Is there a deadline to have them completed by? I thought she was very nice too so hopefully I didn't absolutely do horrendous.

I felt the same way about mine when I went through it. I interviewed on a Wednesday and got the reference request on that Friday. I was told by the girl from the previous semester that if you don't get reference requests then you didn't make it to the next step. I was super nervous! Huge load off when I got that reference email!

I'm sure you did fine. The interview was so basic to me. I wish they would have asked more personalized questions to set you apart from other candidates that are going for the same units as you are...considering the point of the phone interview was to see what unit you fit best.

Who knows! Keep us posted on your progress! I'll let you know if I get a phone interview. Fingers crossed!
