University of West Florida (UWF) FNP - Spring 2025

Published

Hello Anyone! I am currently awaiting acceptance into the UWF FNP Spring 2025 Cohort. Is there anyone else a sitting duck with me? I am beyond nervous but also excited to get this journey started. A little about me: I live in the Pensacola area and currently work as a full-time M-F Clinical RN. I spent my first years as an RN working PCU and Covid Pts. I dabbled a bit of time as a Circulator in the OR and now work in Oncology. Good Luck to anyone else waiting with me.

Accepted as a new grad.  This is why NPs are getting such a bad rap in medicine

That's just downright dangerous.  Then new grads blame the schools for not preparing them.  You should be a minimum requirement for experience just even apply.  Most specialty certifications require so many hours before you even sit for the exam.

The lack of clinical hours that are required as NPs is much lower than PAs and much lower than MDs.  Why because we are supposed to have years of bedside experience to offset that.  Please consider getting more real workd experience. It will be beneficial fir your patients and your future license.

I agree! I wouldn't even feel comfortable as a new grad nurse. But hey, they also have those direct entry NP programs too which is scary. Experience should definitely be a requirement for primary care provider programs. Did you get Accepted to early admission?

Still under consideration.  Havent received my email yet.  Recruiter said it should get something by tomorrow.  At least I'm still in the running LOL

It is a little scary. It goes hand in hand with the need and job market to get more out there. So many patients are complaining their PCPs are retiring, and there aren't enough providers for these patients, and NPs are needed. I am grateful for my experience and excited to gain so much more in the process. Good Luck Still in the running- I am sure your in!

Man they really made me wait until the last day. Finally got my decision letter.  I got accepted during early admission!  Good luck to all of you still waiting on a decision.  Good luck to all of you that didn't get on this week.  You still have an opportunity during the November admissions.   I Look forward to seeong you all  during the program.

Congratulations!! That's so exciting. Did they give you any details regarding the program?

Not as of yet.  Much of the information. I already have though.  When I was applying my recruiter gave me pretty much everything.  I read over a lot of it.  I'm sure I'll be getting more information soon.  I'll try to co.e.back here and post it as it comes in.

OK, congrats again! Other than your 10+ years of experience. Did you have any stats such as a leadership or volunteer experience that you feel may have helped?

ther than releif charge and preceptor not much.  I was traveling for 4 years. 2 before covid and 2 during.  I do also have 1 year of CVICU experience.  GPA wasnt the greatest either.   3.78 for bachelors.  Overall was right at 3.1. First bachelors degree from UF was horrible, like 2.3.  ASN was around 2.5.

First bachelors degree from UF was horrible, like 2.3.  ASN was around 2.5.  My BSN demonstrated that I can accomplish the upper level work.  My experience showed them I can do the job.  I feel like I had a strong goal statement as well.

Like I said before a lot of the reputable programs are admitting based on experience because of the push back in the inudstry right now. To prevent NP programs being a mandatory doctorates degree it only makes sense.  Plus NPs are extrememly oversaturated in Florida. A good prgram will want to diferentiate themselves from degree mills.  UWF is a relatively new program but word is getting around that it is an affordable state school program and not a private instituition degree mill.  That should make admissions a bit more competitive.

I think before applying to NP schools you have to ask yourself... do I want to be an NP or do I not want to be a bedside nurse.  These are highly educated individuals that are making the admission decisions and I am sure they can tell whos applying because they don't want to be a bedside nurse.

Thank you for sharing that. I struggled with expressing everything I wanted to with such a tight word limit on the goal statement. My plan is to edit it and resubmit it. I wish you the best in your endeavors!

Welcome to the waiting game. We will all get through this! My advisor called today and said that at this point we are just waiting for decisions which should be on or around 11/15/2024. He said they get about 150-200 applications and take about 80 from each deadline. Just 4 weeks to go.
