University of South Alabama, MSN Emergency NP Dual Role, Spring 2012 start

I was just accepted into the University of South Alabama's online Advanced Emergency NP dual role program, MSN option, with a Spring start. Is anyone else in the program, or will anyone be starting at the same time? Any advice from previous graduates?

I am also staring the dual role program in January at USA. I'm also very nervous as I'm trying the full time option and still working full time. I just sent a request to join the FB page. I think that was a great idea!!!!

Hello all! I will also be starting the MSN program, but in Adult-Geron rather than ED! I'll be starting with NU 545 and NU 607. Looks like tomorrow will tell us more about what's to come! I searched for the FB group but could not find it for some reason?

I know u ladies are well into ur program, congrats to u all. I am accepted into the AENP but due to my inexperienc in ER, I will be doing extra 120 clinical hours. My question is, can I change to FNP since I have 7yrs med-surg experience or do I stick it out. I am also thing of doing FNP instead of AENP. When one finishes, are we supposed to take both FNP exam and NP exam or one can cover both. I am sorry if I sound distorted but just need more light on these. Thanks for any advice.

I was also interested in this program, I am not enrolled, but I think I can answer part of your question. The ENP is really just Acute Care NP and FNP training, and you have to take the certification for both, seperately. This is a huge plus for those who want a career in ER, BUT here is the thing..Other than ER there is not many other places of practice that will satisfy the clinical hours needed in both the primary care and acute care specialty for one to renew the certifications later on. If you get a job in a family practice office for example, if you are not seeing acutely ill adults than you have not met the requirements to renew your ACNP certif, and vice versa, if you are a hospitalist and are not seeing both adults and peds in a primary care role you cannot renew your FNP.

What would be better honestly is a program that had a combination of ACNP and ACPNP, but that is really 2 seperate degrees with minimal overlap of classes.

Thanks NYCRN16, are you talking out of fact or what you think it is? i think you have a good point. There are some people with FNP that work in adult ICU, how do they satisfy the pediatric aspect of their requirement?

You need a certain number of hours in your specialty to satisfy the requirements, I don't know how an FNP or another primary care specialist fudges his or her numbers to renew, but its not honest. I don't believe that you have to necessarily have peds hours, but the vast majority of your hours have to be primary care or you are out of your scope of practice. The days of FNP's and ANP's in the hospital are ending, the hospitals are getting stricter about using only ACNP's for ICU and other inpatient areas as they should.

On the other hand, you can't renew your ACNP either by working only in a primary care role. That is also out of the scope of practice.

Also accepted into acute/gero NP program at USA! Now I just have I figure out how to pay for it, and no worries about finding a job in our changing healthcare/obamacare landscape! Lol! Anyway whatever the future holds I know I'll be better off with this advanced degree than bedside nursing for 30 years.

I think the dual degree Emergency FNP/ACNP is great bc you have a very broad application for one. You may find the perfect job in one or the other, so I feel that options are better. Also - I have no experience obviously but couldn't one work full time in say acute care ICU and pick up PRN at an urgent care for example and satisfy both requirements?

I just was accepted into the Fall 2014 cohort for the Emergency NP dual role. Can anyone provide feedback on the program? I currently work in the cardiac cath lab and take quite a bit of call so I am nervous how this will impact my schooling. I cut back on my ER shifts, but can't cut back cath lab as of yet. Are you able to do clinicals with physicians, or is it solely NPs? I have several physicians who are set up to preceptor me if I am able to do clinicals with them. Thanks in advance.
