I was just accepted into the University of South Alabama's online Advanced Emergency NP dual role program, MSN option, with a Spring start. Is anyone else in the program, or will anyone be starting at the same time? Any advice from previous graduates?

Thanks!

I just was accepted into the Fall 2014 cohort for the Emergency NP dual role. Can anyone provide feedback on the program? I currently work in the cardiac cath lab and take quite a bit of call so I am nervous how this will impact my schooling. I cut back on my ER shifts, but can't cut back cath lab as of yet. Are you able to do clinicals with physicians, or is it solely NPs? I have several physicians who are set up to preceptor me if I am able to do clinicals with them. Thanks in advance.

I hope we can do clinical with PA/NP/RN and MD/DO!

We can only complete clinicals with MDs and NPs. I haven't specifically asked about DOs. The clinical coordinator was very specific that we cannot use PAs. Also, if in the dual program, we cannot use WHNP, PNP, or midwives for OBGYN and pediatric requirements. Good luck!!

Urtania, do you know if we are allowed to complete clinicals with family members? My husband is a FP/OB doc and also does ER. I know its a conflict of interest, but he is really the best OB doc to learn from in my area!!! ;)

That is what i heard too

Those of you who are currently in the program, could you tell me a ballpark of how many hours you study per week? I imagine it varies depending on exams/projects, but if you could give me an estimate, that'd be great. I'm hoping to still work some while in the program and wanted to see how reasonable that is. Thanks for any info you can offer!

I am in my 3rd semester at USA and work full time (5 days a week). My first semester was NU545 (patho) and Nu607 (a theory class). Summer was another theory class. I can honestly tell you that 95% of my time not working is spent studying or writing papers. I actually started logging my time studying after the first three weeks of class because I wanted to track how many hours I put in. I study/write around 3 hours each evening and about 20 on the weekend - approximately 35 a week. USA is paper heavy. The papers are typically 7-10 pages in length and have very specific grading rubrics. I have not honed my ability to 'whip out' a paper yet, but have gotten quicker. When clinicals start I do not think it will be possible for me to work more than part time. There are simply not enough hours in a week. When school is in session I work and study. That truly is 95% of my life.

You can do it. There is just not much time for other activities.

Hope this helps!

Hi-Congrats!

Any recommendations for good grad professors?
