University of San Francisco CNL Entry Masters

Published

Did anyone else apply to the University of San Francisco Entry Masters program for Summer '09? How do the notifications go out? Anyone accepted or rejected yet? I just submitted my app 2 weeks ago. Any info on this school including competitiveness would be helpful. I have 3.57 undergrad GPA, 4.0 science pre-reqs, clinical experience. Thanks!

Hi, I got on the waitlist for the second time! Is anyone else on the waitlist? Thanks and good luck!

I'm on the waitlist too! This is the 4th school that waitlisted me; ridiculous!! Anyone know how many people they accepted and for how many spots in the program??

I was accepted to the USF summer start ME-CNL cohort and am trying to decide if this program is worth the 70K... I was also accepted to Samuel Merritt ABSN which is almost as expensive at 55K!

Are there any current/former students from either of these programs with advice/suggestions? I took pathophysiology and pharmacology to apply to SMU but definitely feel that I could use a refresher in both which would be part of the USF curriculum. Also, the CNL role ... a big question mark there. I noticed as well that USF does not include Maternity or Elderly components in their ME-CNL program. Any thoughts would be helpful! Thanks.

Some good questions? anyone have any ideas?

I am planning to apply to a master's program in nursing. I wonder what the prospect is for the CNL graduates? What job titles exactly do the graduates apply for and what institutes offer jobs for someone with this degree?

I really want to research the job boards first. I am switching career into nursing, so I need to really do enough research before making the move.

Thanks!

I think the CNL nurses are generally practicing as a regular staff nurse, although are able to move into leadership roles more easily and have an edge for hiring over ADN and BSN nurses. If you want to eventually be an NP, and already know what specialty you want to do, then I suggest checking out direct-entry NP programs. If not, the CNL role is a great way to get your feet wet before deciding if you want to go into an advanced practice role.

CNL is still a very new term and has yet to find it's "place" in the nursing world. There are generally not specific jobs for CNL's, its more an academic term. It's best to think of it as a general master's degree in nursing.

Anyone else waitlisted at USF? I got an email saying they were going to have 10 more spots in the program open up, plus however many open up from the original set of acceptances. I'm thinking my chances are good but I wonder how many were waitlisted.

Not sure but I was accepted and talked to them the other day and they said 370 applied and 40 were accepted. Another 10 would be great for others waiting. Cheers

Congrats to everyone who got in and good luck to all those wait listed. I was wait listed last semester but was lucky enough to get in this time around. For those going and still considering - does anyone have additional info on the CNL?

verda82 - your comments are interesting. I've thought the same thing but haven't had the time to do too much of the research yet. Did you get your info from USF or elsewhere?

You mean regarding the CNL role? I've spoken to a current student at USF about it, and with the faculty/other applicants at USD during my interview there. There is some information online: http://www.aacn.nche.edu/CNL/about.htm too. Like I said, it's still seems a little ambiguous, even to nurses themselves.

Has anyone spoken to any graduates of a CNL program?

Verda82, thanks for the info. I want to look into it further, but need to wait until after next week --- if you get in, do you plan to attend? Waiting / not knowing is the hardest part of being wait listed. Anyway, whatever your plans, I hope you get in!
