University of San Francisco CNL Entry Masters

Published

Did anyone else apply to the University of San Francisco Entry Masters program for Summer '09? How do the notifications go out? Anyone accepted or rejected yet? I just submitted my app 2 weeks ago. Any info on this school including competitiveness would be helpful. I have 3.57 undergrad GPA, 4.0 science pre-reqs, clinical experience. Thanks!

How do you like the program, Sandman? Thanks in advance for any info.

To clarify, I applied to USF last year (to start in summer, 2009) and was accepted. I believe I got my notification sometime in March. It was the only school I had applied to because it was the only school whos application deadline hadnt passed. I was accepted, but decided not to go and to apply to multiple schools (especially UCSF) this year. I also re-applied to USF this year just in case. I received an interview at UCSF and was accepted to Western University near Los Angeles, haven't heard from USF this year yet. Good luck with your apps!

Yes, the $70,000 bill is hard to swallow, so I am trying to explore all of my options.

I'm working on my app right now for the program starting in summer 2010. The only thing that makes me hesitant to go there is that you don't get a BSN (just your RN license if you pass the NCLEX), and it's for a CNL and not a FNP. Am I understanding that correctly?

$70,000??? I thought it was $6,700? $1,000 per unit, 67 units for the program. Am I understanding that wrong too? lol

67 x 1,000 = 67,000. I think you forgot to move the decimal over :) Makes a big difference though. You are correct that the USF program gives you RN licensure after the first year and then your MSN and CNL at the end of the program. So at the end of the program you will have your MSN and there will be no reason for you to need a BSN.

Yes, a CNL is a generic masters degree, and is not considered an Advanced Practice Nursing degree like the CNS or the FNP. However, the program has a great reputation, you do end up with a Masters and your RN in two years, and the CNL is starting to get more recognition from what I understand. I think it's a personal choice and depends on your personal situation. It's a tough call, I know, when our futures are really depending on the decisions we make with all of this.:)

Whoops! That is a huge difference.. I was wondering why the program was so cheap, especially for a master's program at a private university. As much as it is, it's still $30,000 less than Samuel Merritt.

Samuel Merritt is $100,000?!

Hey, isn't the MSN an advanced practice nursing degree or no? A little confused.

No, it's not. A CNL is not considered an advanced practice nurse. I verified this with the admissions person (sorry, can't post her name here, but you know who it is). She explained that the CNL has not been classified as Advanced Practice like the CNS and FNP. You would have to do a post masters program to get either one of those certifications. This is one of the reasons as to why I am on edge about going this route.

FNP program at Samuel Merritt is 113 units, $967 a unit, so if I do my math correctly this time, its ~$110,000. I guess you figure though that going to USF for your CNL and then going to another school to get your FNP would probably be about the same.
