University of Rochester Accelerated Nursing Program - ABPNN

Published

I just got accepted into U of R's accelerated bachelors nursing program. Just wanted to start a thread to see who else is going there!

I agree Syberian! And I'm in the same boat as you, all my eggs are in this basket! Though if I am not accepted I will apply for January admissions. I figure if I keep applying they will eventually get tired of me and accept me! Haha! We need to keep each other sane on here!

Hi Nat, I had one interview, but it was for both BS/MS. How did your interview go, and who did you interview with. They said that we should find out Mid May into June, but I think for the Master's option it will be more towards June. I hope all is going well and I will keep my fingers crossed for all of us. Best Wishes.

Haha, yes we do xoxjedixox! And I have the same plan - if I don't get in I will just apply again and again. Luckily it is not just once per year :D

Thanks URhopeful! I keep my fingers crossed too and hope we all get in!

My interview is coming up this Thursday, it will be with... I think her name is****something, I have to look it up in my calender. It's at 8am, did you guys have it so early too?

About the interviews, *** was the one who told me there are going to be two for the masters program. Idk, we'll see...

Did anyone apply to MGH? Where else did you guys apply besides Rochester?

I also hate this long nerve-wracking wait, this is the last school that i'm waiting an answer from.

Good luck! Are you leaning more toward Rochester over MGH?

npjl,

You should have started by now, right? How is the program?

Hey! Nope, starts Monday the 16th!

SyberianPuppy,

Thanks! I actually don't know, I would love to live in Boston, I really like that city. However, Rochester is supposedly a better school. So I guess I'll decide when I hear the decision from the latter.

Good luck to you too! :)

npjl - good luck on monday! I have a question for you! When did you get your book/supply list? Was it with the acceptance letter?

Also - what's on it?

They only sent it to us a few weeks ago, but I believe the books are all listed for Fall on the URMC bookstore site. You'll have to enter the courses you'd be taking, but that easy to find on the SON website. And thanks!!

Thanks npjl. What about supplies?

Hi all,

sorry I missed a few posts.

Dress code -- Nobody wears their scrubs to class. Only on clinical days pretty much. Especially early in the program where you don't even have clinicals. Clinical days and simulation days are when you'll end up wearing your scrubs. There's nothing saying you can't I suppose, but you might be the only one. Most of us wear jeans and t-shirts or polos, sneakers and even one who wears her western boots.

The genetics book. Hopefully noone bought it. If you're class is online like ours was, we didn't use it, and you can't return it to the bookstore. A lot of people had trouble returning it. That was the easiest class I have ever taken. That said, it's too easy to just breeze through and not retain a single thing. Most of the diseases you learn about you'll regret not retaining if you don't put some effort in.

Supplies -- There is a day during orientation when you go to the EVARTS lounge and get your picture taken, and select all your scrubs and pick your stethoscope. They don't have many colors, and you can't exchange it for a different color across the street at the bookstore either. No biggie though, it really doesn't matter what color you pick.

What I bring to clinical is pretty common, although I'm the only one who brings the pocket jarvis guide with me. I bring two black pens, a penlight, a small mead notebook that fits in my pocket, my stethescope, my jarvis pocket guide. Also all your drug cards and your clinical prep sheets. Those can fold up and fit in a pocket fine. You will not be able to carry a clipboard around very well. You'll end up finding a place to set it on the unit like I do, and hardly touching it at all.

For future reference, after long term care ( where you don't do any real nursing other than assessments ) you'll want to stash some hospital stuff in your pockets. 2x2 guaze pads, an extra pair of gloves, a pair of shears, and some tape. I also carry saline flushes but you likely won't technically be able to use them during the first 2 rotations, it will be to supply the nurse your following. Also, some red caps for IVs, and maybe a little square retractable tape measure. You may find that a lot of nurses do not measure wounds, or do not measure them that you know of, but that does not mean you do not need to measure them for your papers.

Patches and scrub bottoms. Ladies -- you may want to buy mens bottoms if they give you the same style scrubs they gave us. Mens bottoms have cargo pockets on the side. ladies do not. They are much better for carrying stuff around. They also don't have that little slit at the bottom which makes them wide enough to hang over your shoes onto the ground. Mens scrub tops have a left breast pocket that ladies do not. Patches should be sewn on because the glue sucks and comes off in the wash. I tried. They are supposed to be sewn above the pocket for men, but you won't get in trouble if you sew it on the pocket because it doesn't specify exactly in the handbook.

I will be at the luncheon on Tuesday for the newcomers. If you see a guy in a jacket with a firefighter logo that's me. A few of us may come to orientation as well so you can field us any questions you have, but I don't know if they've blocked off any time for us yet or not.

The first semester for most of us was very rough. Get some sleep tonight, and for the next couple nights. Have some dinner with your friends and families. Make sure you tell them that this school is intense, and you will not have the time you used to. Good luck, and I'll see you around the halls if you're starting.
