University of Rochester ABPNN September 2018

Starting a thread for those applying to the University of Rochester ABPNN September 2018 start date. Anyone finished their applications yet?

About how much did it cost ?

Hi Gooper! Do you happen to know how they choose students for the program? My undergrad GPA isnt the best but I do have a masters, so I hope counts for something. I'm afraid to complete the prereqs through UR, and end up not getting into it, since other accelerated programs require labs for their prereqs.

Currently the prereqs are $1150 per class. I work at the UR so I had a tuition benefit that helped pay for the classes, otherwise I'm not sure if I would have taken them here or at the local community college.

Also, I don't know how they choose their students. I wish I did! I'm on the waitlist. I had good grades for my prereqs, but my undergrad GPA is just...fine.

Was microbiology one of those prerequisites that you took online if so how would you rate the difficulty of the course and the exams

That's good you got the classes discounted since they cost so much. Could you rate the other classes also? Since the tests are "open-book," did you have to study?

I hope you get into their program though -- it's so close you!

Micro was the 1 prereq that I didn't take online. I took that back when I was in school for my bachelors. I've heard from other people that micro is the hardest of the prereqs, but I can't speak from personal experience on that. I had the most trouble with statistics, but even then I didn't think it was too bad. The teacher provided a lot of outside links, and links to youtube videos that were very helpful. For me, nutrition was the easiest, but that might also be because it repeats a lot of the things that are taught in A&P and also some stuff that I already knew just in general. I definitely made sure to review the material before the tests, especially with stats. With that class I tried to review the previous lessons as well, because it does draw on that. As for the tests being open book, you have a limited time to complete the tests for most of the classes, so I wouldn't suggest going in knowing nothing. Also, the A&P teacher does not want it to be open book (not that they can force that), but it certainly doesn't hurt to know that material. That's definitely information I would imagine you'd want to be familiar with if you go to nursing school. Oh, I thought psych was fairly easy as well. For most of the classes, if you go through the provided powerpoints, and learn the vocab, and use the materials provided by the professor, you should be fine. Like I said, the hardest class for me was stats, and even then I had a 90 for the class.

hi everyone!

I was also waitlisted and the waiting is killing me!!! has anyone heard anything recently? whenever I call i don't get very much information.

I called yesterday and was told that the class is full for the fall. She said it's unlikely that we will be called for September, but still possible up until the 4th. I reapplied for the January start though, how about you?

thanks for the update gooper! i applied for jan start date as well, so i guess we will keep our fingers crossed for then now.

Does anyone know how the January application works ? Like the selection process or how they make their decision

For the prereqs, you took about 2 per semester? How many hours a week did you spend on the course? Besides UR, did you apply elsewhere?

Thank you so much for answering these questions for me! :)

The time spent depended on the class for me. Like stats, I probably spent about 1 1/2 -2 hours per module. I think there were 13 modules for that class. Nutrition, I maybe spent a half hour at most. For that class, I would glance at the powerpoint, and if it was something I was already familiar with, I wouldn't spend long reviewing it before taking the test. I took A&P 1 and psych in the fall, A&P 2 and stats in the spring, and nutrition in the summer. I guess technically I'm still in nutrition, but I finished it back in June so I forget about that.

Also, no, I didn't apply anywhere else. I considered applying to some of the other local colleges with similar programs, but most of them require more prereqs and require them to be taken within the last 5 years. I graduated from college about 12 years ago, and I didn't want to spend a ton of money retaking gen bio and gen chem and precalc and all this other stuff. Also, I've talked to some admissions counselors at some of the state schools, and they said because the tuition is so cheap, they get a ridiculous amount of applicants, so basically you're only getting in if you have a 4.0, which I definitely do not have, unfortunately!
