University Of Dundee

Hello,

I'm wondering if any of you are familiar with UNIVERSITY OF DUNDEE (CELTIC SCHOLAR). I have been looking for a distance nursing program that will help me get my Bachelors Degree in Nursing. This particular distance program is based in UK. Looking through their website I find that this is the program that suites my schedule (between work and family). The cost of the program is not bad either, about $13500 for the entire course ( 4 modules to complete the course; each module is about 4-6 months long depending on your pace). I've also talked to one of their representatives but I'm still quite not sure because the fact that they're not based here in the US ( what if they're fake???). According to them they are accredited by NLNAC. NO CLINICALS, NO EXAMS, NO CLASSES/INTERNET. Only required is to complete a presentation paper after each module. Personal tutor is also available for the duration of the course...Sounds good to be true, doesn't it? I just don't want to be a victim of a scam. What do you guys think? Any feedbacks? Here's their website: www. celticscholar.com.

Can't say that it is valid or not but have never heard of it before. The University of Dundee is real and quite well known, what would worry me is the "celtic-scholar link", if that makes sense.

This is the web site for the university of Dundee http://www.dundee.ac.uk/ have a look on there. if you go in to the nursing section and then distance learning it does do the course you want (i think) but the web page looks very different. It does give some e-mail addresses and numbers to get more info.

Sorry this doesn't flow very well but it's been a very long day.

My concern is that you are in the states and the program is not. You should contact the BON and make SURE this would be accepted in the US. Now, how you can get a RN degree without clinical application is completely odd to me. Maybe I am just dumb..but I just don't see that happening here in the states. No exams? How do they know you are getting a grasp on the info with no exams? I don't know but it sure sounds dang fishy to me.... SO MUCH of school is clinical application....You should seriously check with BON.....

Here is the website

Good luck and BE CAREFUL

"Celtic-scholar link"..you mentioned this is what would worry you? What do you mean by that? I checked the NLNC website to check if this school is really accredited and theyir name is on the list.

This is not a scam, I am currently enrolled in this program. I had my nurse educator check it out and it is legit. Because you are practising as a nurse they count that as clinical time and your papers are relevent to your place of work. I trained in Scotland and find that this is the best way for me to get my Bachelors as I don't have the same pre-reqs that US nurses have and to persue my Bachelors here it would take about the same time as someone starting out which was not the plan for someone with 16yrs+ in nursing.

It is basically an RN-BSN program.

are you currently in the US or in Scotland? How do you find the modules? Are they doable? I am just afraid of going into something that I may regret later and plus the money I will be spending ( owing, I should say...LOAN). You're right, I don't see why other institutions doesn't count work setting (such as practicing currently) as clinical. This is the reason why I am considering Univ. of Dundee because with what I've read so far, it meets my needs as a working professional. And oh how do you communicate with your personal tutor? Do you have to make an international call to get a hold of them (which will add up tp the cost of the course)? How do you send payments being the home base is in Ireland?

I am currently in Colorado. The payments are made to the "celtic-scholar" and then they process the fee and then you receive all the material plus your student card from the university, you have access to their on-line library and also they provide the basic books from the coursework.

The modules are listed in the celtic scholar workbook and you initially will email for a tutorial and then you will be given a choice of times available pick one and then your tutor will call you, the downside with being 7 hours behind the UK is that I have to get up pretty early for the tutorial. The focus is really on self study but you can have as many tutorials as you think necessary or if it is something simple you can communicate via email. There is also a messageboard with other students to discuss the coursework.

I looked into the program and had actually enrolled a couple of years back. If all you plan on doing is getting your BSN and not going any farther. This is a valid program. If however you're planning on going farther, then you need to do a program that is closer to the US model. If you've already got all the sciences then maybe you can get away with it. I contacted the addmisions departments of the places I was going to apply to grad school after and non of them "recognized" the degree. I would still have to have gone and gotten a ton of other credits, so I went another route. It is good in one way, that it focuses on clinical nursing and not a bunch of theory. Just do your homework and be carefull.

thanks for the reply. I am not actually planning on doing anymore than getting my Bachelors. I enjoy doing bedside nursing....too much politics outside! I 'd like to get my BSN for personal satisfaction. BTW, What do you mean by " JUST DO YOUR HOMEWORK AND BE CAREFUL"? Oh did you actually enrol and finish with Dundee?

I see....How far are you in their program now? Did you take out a loan? The hospital I an currently working at has an educational assistance program to where they pay $5000 a year. So, if I understood it right, materials are not sent unless payments are made? Seems like coming up with almost $4000 to start with is a lot. What if you decide that it's not what you expect and you want to quit?

I took one module, and then found out that non of the schools I was going to apply to would recognize it. So I didn't do any more. I did the would care module, which was what I was going at the time.

I did have to cough up the cash up front.

THe do your homework comment was to make sure you ask tons of questions. I didn't think I was going to want to go on either, but here I am working on a duel MSN. ANd I'm going to be staying in clinicla nursing, just in a slightly different role.

I graduated from the RN to BSN program. As far as the clinicals go, they give you credit for your basic nursing knowledge you received in the Diploma or ADN program you entered. I am sure in those programs you did a ton of clinicals. Also, you are given credit for your experience. Being a nurse of 25 years and in many areas of nursing you more than make up for clinicals. In each module you have to do papers, indepth papers, on the area you are working in. You have to keep in close touch with your instructor. This is done online. You also have a preceptor in your area of work that basically supervises what you are doing in the US. You also have to directly apply what you are writing about in the papers you do and tell, in detail, how that made a difference in your area of practice. The program is not a push over. As far as the credits not being accepted in the US, I personally feel this is a ploy by US institutions to protect their own. This also means more money for tuition for them to repeat what you have already done and to basically guarantee job security for the faculty. The Dundee program is NLN approved and is fully accredited. Yes, it is true the institutions will most likely not accept the credits, but I feel if someone wanted to appeal this from a legal standpoint the student would win. I got the BN Degree. It fufulled the requirements of my employer. I am 56 years old and this is it for school, so I found the program to be very good. I posted a detailed message earlier today concerning Dundee.
