University of Miami FNP 2016

Published

Hello! I am wondering if anyone has been admitted to the part time FNP program at UM. I applied this week & I am looking forward to hearing back from them in regards to my application. I would like to know how long to wait after submitting your application through Nursing CAS ? Any information regarding the admission process and the part time program in general would be greatly appreciated

Congrats!! Yeah I saw that too, looking forward to meeting you all!

Also, is everyone from Florida? I am moving from New York. It is going to be a rough couple months for me.

Yep but I currently live like 4 hours away, so I plan on moving to Miami an looking for a new job

Congratulations Quinnk27!!! Which program are you going for PT or FT? I am still waiting to schedule an interview but talked to a few people in their office today and was told I should hear something soon. Any pointers for the interview? How were the patho and pharm questions? Would you say that was the majority of the interview or minority? Im studying for my CEN (certified Emergency nurses cert) now and am hoping it will help me with the questions... but thats the only part that makes me nervous. Anything advice you have will be much appreciated! =) And Congrats again!!!!!!

I live in Fl, Orlando now, but will be moving down if I get accepted. =)

You'll make it through!!! UM is very supportive from what Ive heard. I talked to a girl named Tina about the best areas to live that are close to school. She may be really helpful if you call the Nursing School

Have you considered a travel position? That is how I am going to move. The pay is great and then I don't have to worry about finding a place to live in from across the country

That's a really good option. I'll definitely look into it. I've only been working for a little more than a year, I feel like that may make it difficult. Also, I plan on moving permanently s. Fl, more north once I'm done with school (west palm) so I'll definitely have to weigh those options.

Thanks though!

Can anyone shed some light on their interview? Any tips? What were the pharm and patho questions like? And CONGRATS again to those who already got in!!!

During my interview (for acute care NP) they asked me about the role of an NP. They asked me why I wanted to become one, and what my 5 year plan was. I was then asked a few clinical questions. I do not remember all of them but I was asked to explain the pathophysiology of heart failure and after I had explained that they had me go in to what medications I would expect them to be on and basically how it would be managed in the ICU. There were two people in my interview and they were welcoming, but fairly serious throughout the interview. If I were you I would focus on studying the basic concepts for whatever program you are trying to enter. For example for the acute care NP I focused on heart failure, hemodynamics, respiratory failure etc. Don't over do it or your brain will be mush during the interview and it will be counterproductive. They are going to be focused more on the type of person you are and that you are a critical thinker, not that you can recite facts from a textbook.

I did not see your previous posts so I apologize my phone doesn't always show them all. I am doing the part time study that starts in January 2016. The interview was about 50% clinical questions which isn't bad. Mine lasted about 20 minutes. CEN will definitely help refresh your memory. I bet they cycle through a handful of questions for the interviews so I would obviously know heart failure very well. I used a lot of YouTube lectures to help study. Here is an example.

These types of videos helped me quickly refresh my memory without spending hours reviewing material I already knew. There are plenty of professors who make them too so there's a large selection. You should do fine!

Hey Daniella8724!! The interview process for me was pretty straight forward. They asked general questions like why UM? What is my 5 year plan? What my nursing background was like? So since I have more experience in cardiac they asked me patho on CHF, an mechanism of action of some of the medications used to treat it. It's a little nerve racking but don't worry you'll be fine, as long as you prepare an sound confident you'll do great!! :) Also at the end ask them questions as well, helps show interest an see if the program is right for you. Hope this helps!!

Thank you so much! That helps a bunch!! The patho is the only part that makes me slightly nervous since they can pull from anywhere. I work in the ER, so they have a lot to pick from. Crossing my fingers!
