I was wondering if there was anyone out there that applied last fall that could tell us when they learned the fate of their application? I was just wondering how long we (Fall 2009 applicants) would have to wait until we hear back from the admissions office. Thanks and good luck to everyone else!
I noticed 2 posts mentioning the MedCalc quiz...
My advice is to not memorize all the different formulas in the textbook. It will really help if you learn how to do it the ratio proportions way. Saves you a lot of time and brain cells since it can be applied to many of the questions. For my first med calc I did it the hard way, this time for Adult health I managed to forget all the formulas and started fresh with proportions (:
The second one is a lot easier as well. But they do throw in little things you don't think about studying for such as unit conversions and insulin administration process. It threw a lot of people off this semester cause we were not sure if it was a trick question since it seemed so easy... lol.
Another random thought: If you're attending Baltimore campus, do not take informatics in class!! I think I mentioned that in previous posts.. hahaha but I just wanted to put that out there again
I also plan on getting rid of some books from this semester and last. PM to find out more.

I am currently taking informatics online. Those that take the in class portion are definitely jealous. The online portion is super easy. I literally spend only 2 to 3 hrs each week it. The only difficult portion of the class is that everyone has to do a Term Paper and the Group Presentation.
But definitely, take it online.
For Shady Grove, informatics - N405 is only available online (and yes, if I had to go to class for that one.....yuck!) Not sure if Bmore has unlimited enrollment online or not. One thing to keep in mind. The program is set and structured. There are enough spaces available so there won't be any competition to get a class you need. At Shady Grove, we all are in the same classes for lecture so signing up first really doesn't matter. Labs are different so that may be an incentive to sign up as soon as you can to get the lab time of your choice.
In reply to Dork's post (hi J!) yes its true that only 5 out of 50 passed the first time. I was one of the lucky 5.
To tack onto what Lonestar said about proportions concerning MedCalc. The workbook will show you two different ways to get to the same answer. Try them both out initially and then see which one works for you. There are reasons why both are good to know to help you understand the concepts. The bottom line is that your professor is looking for the right answer and doesn't care what method you use to get there.
I also saw someone talk about age somewhere. I think I heard the avg age is 29 for UMB SON undergrad program. And there are some of us a lot older than others :-) A fair number of us already have degrees. Others are already nursing techs. Don't let any of that intimidate you - its all good for you. One thing that is different about nursing school is that it is more much more communal than you have likely experienced before. We all help each other and the more someone knows the better it is for all of us.
BTW, We are having our spring break this week and as you can see none of us went to Cancun! Not sure what is going on in Bmore but we have tests to take the day we get back and more as the week progresses. Something to think about if you try and plan ahead for vacations during this time -- it may not be a good idea.

Spots are limited at the Bmore campus... I tried to switch out of the in-class session to take it online... but no budging. So make sure when you sign up for classes online you choose online! There's actually quite a number of online sessions so you won't have to fight for it right when registration starts... just make sure you don't wait around for a day or 2.
JR, you're right... lol, I'm actually taking a break right now from going over Adult health. I'm starting to freak out cause I already feel behind schedule (and there's 6 more days of break.. lol). I was already supposed to be done going over Renal/GU dysfunctions by yesterday and by now I'm supposed to be going over them a 2nd time around. Cries... I'm not done with Renal yet!
haha! us juniors have inadvertantly taken over this posting!!
Just a recommendation to the new incoming students, for the med-calc test one of the seniors passed on a formula to me that helped a great deal...
Remember this:
Order of med
___________ X Volume
Available med
in other words:
O
__ X Vol.
A
Order of mds divided by available meds time the volume
Example: Physician orders 5,000mg of XXXX medication, the med is only available in 10,000mg/ml. Do the necessary calculation to figure out how much to give your patient.
10,000mg
_________ X 1mL = 0.5mL of the XXXX med is to administered to the pt.
5,000mg
This is the MAIN formula to remember (altho there are more) but this sums a good chunk of this up!
