Hi all soon to be fellow classmates! I just wanted to start this thread up so we didn't have to go weaving through all of the older stuff on the old threads.
I am really excited about starting school come January, really nervous though too. I have a lot to get done between now and then and sometimes I just don't think there is enough time in the day. Oh well, I plan on enjoying the holidays and working my buns off to save some money so that isn't an additional stressor during the first semester.
So lets post our questions, our thoughts and hopefully just get to know one another! And again....CONGRATULATIONS!!!!
I just had a thought. Try Yelp.
for apartments:
for food:
http://www.yelp.com/search?find_desc=apartments&find_loc=baltimore%2Cmd&ns=1#find_desc=food
they map they show has all the locations and they are north south. Obviously there are other places but if you want close to campus this may help.
Aslo the local entertainment paper The Citypaper has online listings for apartments, food, shows(come see my band The Sick Sick Birds),clubs etc.
WOW...I'm on the waiting list (the mysterious list of who knows how many) and just looking at everything you guys have to get done scares me! I got into two other programs but I've declined admission to both to hold out. I applied to UMB extremely late because I decided the Accelerated BSN program I got into just wasn't right for me at the LAST minute. It was sooo expensive and I just can't imagine taking out 80 grand in loans for it... It's feasible, but given the options I'd rather not spend the next 10 yrs of my young adult life drenched in debt if I can avoid it!!! Plus--UMB is way better.
I am going to get the immunizations/CPR complete just in case like you said Tea....I hope it doesn't jinx me! Luckily our finals are tomorrow and Tuesday...maybe sending in my A's in A/PII, Micro and nutrition will help? ehhhh waiting is no fun during finals week. I hate this! Sorry I had to vent. haha
thanks for the info guys. that's really helpful Thumbs. i'll check out mt.vernon online, and should i sign a lease with lafayette, i would definitely not be out till 11pm. checked out yelp links too. thanks so much and goodluck with sick sick bird (you sure not a carrier of bird flu? haha...kidding). sounds like a very interesting band. that's great that you can keep your interests while studying nursing (i'll have to be juggling very hard to keep up with things).
and all the apts you mentioned Lunaaedon looks good online and with the use of google aerial shots, i could see the streets and how close it is to UMB (next best thing to do without actually visiting the place *sigh*).
mhinds12 goodluck with your finals this week. ok, time to sign-off..been spending a lot of time already with UMB preparation so need to study for micro final. Btw, got my CPR card this afternoon, so 1 thing off my list. Tests for all those vaccinations if needed to be done this week. breathe, breathe, breathe.
is anyone going part time? I called and they said part time is an option. I've been going at it strong for two years (full time w/ 3 little ones)completing pre reqs. I'm getting a little nervous about continuing full on for another semester of difficult classes with only a few weeks break. I'm thinking part time to start and continue full time for the following semesters. any thoughts?

i don't have any kids and i know its going to be a crazy 2 years for me.... but on the other hand if you're anything like my mom, then you can do it-- and you've done you're pre-reqs full time with KIDS?!?! sorry but OMG! in my words.... that's pretty impressive....
i think the best candidate(s) you could talk to would be a current UMB student that is/was in your situation.... i would send a very nice email to your academic advisor stating your situation asking for examples or contacts you could talk to... that might help? I wouldn't listen to those who haven't been there done that yet-- I'd get some solid contacts if I were you.
I sent an email to my academic advisor and she gave me emails to two girls that were from my high school and I ended up remembering them and my brothers knew them- they've started sending me tips and how they did this and that and the best advice i've gotten from them so far is 'suck it up and live at home for the first semester and save money' clinicals aren't bad the first semester and they know i don't have money to go bust on an apartment just so i don't have to live at home... also they told me to not talk to the medical students because they scope out and use the new nursing students--not that i'm that way but it's nice to know when a cute med student starts being nice to steer clear... i could go on and on with their fun bits of advice :loveya:

i really liked the malboro ( super close) but the firestation is nearby. when i went on friday everyd 10 mins was an ambulance. charles towers was good too. i guess it wont matter if your a heavy sleeper though. avalon was nice ( although it did look kinda sketchy across the street).
