Anyone applied to the UHV 2nd nursing degree?

HOw was it?

Is the program accredited?

JSanz8- Thank you so much for all your help!! :)

Just had a couple of questions. Do you have to take a Pharmacology class? I was going over the classes and I didn't see this class on there. Also, do you have clinicals only once a week or like 2 or 3 times a week? Also are the clincials 12 hour days? Do you have clinicals on the weekends? How do the hospitals feel about UHV as a Nursing school? Only asking because UHV has just accredited the 2nd degree BSN program a couple years back. Also do you feel that you are ready to take the NCLEX exam after being in this program? Also asking because UHV's NCLEX passing rate is 74% as compared to 90%-100% at other Nursing schools like UTMB, TWU, etc.

Thanks :)

Look at the amount of candidates that took the nclex when looking at the rates. That makes a big difference in the scoring results i reviewed.

I too just got invited for an interview! Now I am torn between TWU and UHV/Sugarland...

I want to get it over with quick, but I am nervous about how intense it is.

How do we find out the passing rate of the nclex for UHV? compared to other schools of course.

Hi Jeanster,

You can find the pass rate for all Texas schools at the Board of Nursing's website. We're not allowed to post links to other website, but just google BON Texas, click on Nursing Education, then Approved Programs and you should see a link there for 2009 NCLEX (RN) pass rates.

Basically UH-V has graduated one class, and has a 77% pass rate, as 7 out of 9 ppl passed the NCLEX. At TWU, 301 out of 319 students passed the NCLEX, giving a 94% pass rate. I believe that includes both Dallas and Houston locations.

I got accepted into TWU and UT, and received an interview for UH-V. I think I'm going to go with UT since their program is only 1.5 years, a happy medium for the three programs. I think if I had to choose between TWU or UH-V, I would choose TWU for the well-known quality of the program. The accelerated nature of UH-V does make it attractive, but at the same time sounds like it will be very intense. Good luck to whatever you decide!

JSanz8,

Thanks for answering all my concerns!! Good luck with your final months!!

Thanks SerenePeach.

I'm going to def work on a pros and cons list for both...but you're right though about TWU as a better known school. That passing rate makes a huge difference.

It's just that I live so close to the UHV/Sugarland campus...but distance should not be my deciding factor. It's truly the education. AhhHH!!!

Good luck to you as well at UT. :)

Ut is a reputable school but I've heard lots of bad things about how the staff treats students sometimes and I worked with a nurse that graduated from there. Sometimes u have to find out for yoursellf though. That won't be everyones experience. I'm still torn I want to get it over with but I also want to work because I am soley alone out here. My family lives in another state. I'm going to the uhv interview but I may wait to apply for TWU and attend parttime. I missed all the scholarship deadlines! Congrats jeanster we were worried for nothing!

Thanks SerenePeach.

Hi Jeanster,

I do agree with you the pass rate is very important. However UHV hasn't been around that long to have a good enough pass rate for us to compare with. If we must compare, we should compare between two schools that were established about the same time, i.e. TWU with UTHSC or UHV with Texas A&M. I'm torn between the two schools also, TWU (2 yrs) vs UHV (1). Obviously we want to finish quicker to start our new life....but so many pros and cons.

Some of my Pros and Cons:

1. Pro: I actually live in the Med Center area so the commute to TWU is by Metro

Con: Cinco Ranch/Sugarland are both over 30 mins away from me.

2. Pro: UHV is one yr intensed program

Con: TWU is two years

3. Pro: TWU has summer break

Con: UHV: 20 hrs of class/lab/clinical time

All-in-all....I'm still torned. But I guess we would have to see after the interview at UHV. We could be worried for nothing or for something (for those lucky few). But I still am going to the interview then I will decide then.

Good Luck to everyone!

I got an interview invitation at UHV too. I will definitely go for the interview. I hope to get into UHV. I accepted TWU offer but I prefer the one year program to two year TWU program.

karimi11,

I'd like to know what your deciding factor is for UHV. Yes, it's a shorter program but it is extremely intense. I guess that is why I still cannot decide and I just wanted to hear others opinions.

Either way, good luck to you! :)

I'm in a little different boat but am looking for advice, too. I got an invitation to the interview in my email...still haven't gotten through the mail yet. :(

Anyway, I am torn between Lone Star ADN RN program vs UHV. ADN is a 2 year "part time" program. I can work if I need to, less intense, 1/3 the cost and closer to my home. But, UHV is only 1 year (so while more expensive, I am going to be out quicker making nursing salary), can't work if I needed to while going to school, further from home (I live in Cypress), and I am scared as hell about how intense it is and am totally afraid of failure! I know that I should just suck it up and go UH and be done with it because then I will have BSN besides ADN but I am just afraid! I read the info on the NCLEX pass rates but does anyone know what the drop out rate is? They were very specific in the info session that if you make anything less than a C, then you are out! So, it must happen....

What do you all think? Lone Star vs UHV?

Jeanster,

I would go with what feels right. Right now the idea of finishing within a year sounds great to me. The work load is little frightening but it can be done. I will go for the interview with an open mind. I figure they will provide tonnes of information during the interview session. I intend to go for TWU orientation too. That way, I will be able to make a more informed decision. As of now, I am not in UHV yet so I am not stressing so much about it.

As for kimberlyw, I would definitely consider a BSN over an ADN. Otherwise best of luck in whichever program you choose.
