university of detroit mercy second degree program

U.S.A. Michigan

I am thinking about going to Mercy's accelerated second degree program but I hear they lose many people during the year due to grades. Is that true? Is it too fast and should I consider a 2 year program? I am a good student but I'd hate to spend all that money then not make it as they don't allow anyone to retake a class so I hear as other schools do. I am open to all feedback. Thank you.

msuliz,

I don't really remember what my acceptance letter looked like, but if you're unsure about whether that's an acceptance letter, you should contact the administrative assistant who is in charge of Nursing stuff. She should be able to answer your questions, although sometimes she can take a while to respond, so you have to be persistent.

Hi msuliz, I haven't received a letter about a criminal background check from UDM, but I did get an email from the SDO counselor telling me I got accepted. Also, when I log into my online application, there is a section that says "Application Status" and "Decision" that says I've been accepted. Good luck!!

Hey ccarts, the GPA from your bachelors degree overall must be a 3.0 or higher, and all prereqs must be a 2.5 or higher. Good luck to you, I hope to see you in January!!! :lol2:

I had a question for anyone already accepted to the program... I am also waiting to hear back for the January 2011 cohort and today I got a packet in the mail that contained a letter about a criminal background check and also a generic letter that didn't say I was officially accepted BUT thanked me for my interest in the nursing program and that "they were sure I would do great things here". Is this my acceptance letter? I thought it would be more along the lines of "CONGRATULATIONS" and that I would get an email first.... But I'm not sure why they would send information about a background check to someone who wasn't going to be in the program...

I called admissions and left a message to get back with me but they haven't called back yet.

Basically I don't want to get my hopes up if I'm not really accepted, but I feel like I am... so I'm about to scream with happiness :D

Thanks for your responses sophia and kalabaw! I wonder if I didn't get that same acceptance procedure because I still have two prereqs to finish fall semester... are you already done with all prereqs kalabaw? I would assume they can't send me an official acceptance until I complete both of those classes with a 2.5 or better. Just a guess.

I sent them an email since they never called me back, so I am just waiting...

Hi msuliz. I still have two prereqs to finish in the fall as well so my acceptance is still conditional. Have you had a chance to see what your online application says?

As I understand it if you have taken a minimum of 5 of the prereques they will fully admit you knowing you will complete the others with a passing grade before the program starts. So even if you have 2 outstanding you should be accepted if you are accepted.

I have heard positive things over all about the program but people do get weeded out due to grades. So once it starts make sure you will do what it takes to get above the 75% because as I said, you will not get your money back or have the option to retake the class the next time around which sucks. They are the only school I've talked to that gives no second chances. All other second degree programs I've talked to give you at least one more shot at retaking a class god forbid you fall behind.

Since you asked msuliz2010, I am looking at a few programs both in MI and in other states. I just might end up at OCC since it's so cheap and get the BSN at Oakland as I work. OR I might just do PA school. I haven't decided yet. I have most of the prereques for both. I'd like to end up as an NP or PA. For me, I just don't want to carry that debt. I'd rather have it take an extra year and have 15 k in debt compared to 60 k. Also, there are a few programs now where you can go from Bachelors in another field all the way through NP in 3 years and I'd like to look at that too although those are very expensive but I don't mind taking out that kind of debt if I know I am guaranteed a job making 80 k or so with the ability to make more as an NP.

Sorry for rambling.

Kalabaw I checked my application on the website and my application status says "Complete and ready for review" like it has for the last month and a half... I'm so confused as to why I got that information in the mail. I guess I'll just wait to get a call or email back from the admissions office, and since it's Saturday I guess it won't be until next week sometime.

Creativetype, it sounds like you have a lot of good options to decide from :) good luck!!!

Hello!

Where are you looking at your status on the U of D website?

Hey ccarts, I'm going to UD's home page, clicking on the Apply link, then the apply online, then entering my user ID and password, then clicking on my application for winter 2011 and it brings up an application summary and in that summary it says "application status: complete and ready for review"

should I be looking somewhere else?

Hi msuliz2010!

Actually, I'm sure you are looking in the correct spot; however, I keep trying to look in this same spot and my status isn't coming up. I've called on this twice but haven't gotten a response back. I just wanted to confirm that this is where everyone else is looking.

Thanks for getting back to me:)

The woman you want to talk to is in charge of the second degree admissions.

Yeah I have emailed and left her a voicemail, I think she must be really busy this time of year. Guess I'll just have to wait it out :)

Well, admissions got back with me today. They said I'm not accepted to the program yet, and what I got in the mail was information they send to all nursing applicants. Which is interesting since Kalabaw was already accepted to the program and hadn't received that info while they were still considered an applicant.

All I can do now is wait... again...
