Is their anyone going to UC this fall? I was wondering how the application and interview process went for you? I am going to apply this fall. I am married and have three children. So I don't have an option of applying to other schools and moving. (by the way did I say my husband is a self-employeed grain farmer, not much for re-locating)

Another catch is that my high school girl-friend is going to apply also (her situation is the same, 3 kids and a farmer). Any tips on getting in together. I would hate to be split up but I know that is a chance we have to take.

Some background for me is

OB X 3yr., OR X 3yr.(scrub, circulate, recovery), CVU X 2yr.

GRE 1100

3.8 GPA

Graduate core classes currently

CCRN within the next 90 days

PALS, ACLS

Background for my friend

ICU x 12yr., OB x 2yr.

GRE 1200

CCRN, PALS, ACLS

Undergraduate GPA 2.8

Graduate classes GPA 3.8

Hi adidas,

The GRE is changing the format of its questions this year, so I think in order to weigh the scores fairly, they are asking that this years' applicants should take the test before September. Also, the deadline is in October. I am applying this year and I strongly recommend you go to their next information session at UC. They actually have a great q&a session and you get to meet w/ the director and current students. It was very helpful and this is my 1st choice of school. They even get you in touch w/ add'l loan/ grant money.

I'm very disturbed by what I have read about the admin. though. I'm not transferring any credits, but I am curious if they are aware of the inconsistencies. He seemed competent enough at the info session. But I'll be adding a signature of receipt on everything I send in. :wink2:

Pinsandneedles,

I am starting @UC this Fall. It has nothing to do with the administration as a whole;it has to do with what I consider to be a bit of an antiquated process. I think UC has enjoyed great status over the years (consistently top 10-ish) and they never lack a good applicant pool--no harm no foul is probably the philosophy. They get the kind of student they want and "if it is not broken;don't fix it." The lack of feedback is the issue. I mean even the info on the website info concerning application is nebulous unless you call and bug people. As the application deadline came and went, I had no concrete idea that everything was received and on the up&up. However, once I received an interview offer it was smooth--the rest played out better than I could have imagined. UC is just a good fit for me for a multitude of reasons and fortunately it panned out.

All things at UC have gone very smoothly for me (I will be starting in the Fall with Beedog). I did mail all of my stuff overnight with receipt confirmation... In adition, I called to make sure everything was in order. I would (and did) do this at each school I applied to.

The faculty and admimistration at this school seem to be VERY attentive. I e-mailed the head of the department a couple of times and have always gotten a response within the next 24 hour period (usually within a couple of hours).

They have assigned new students in the anesthesia program mentors (upper class students in the anesthesia program) who are able to answer questions about how it really is in the program...and this is before we have even started! This has been a great help to me.

Good luck to you!

I did send course descriptions to him and he returned my email saying that four courses would be transferable. I did keep all of that information. However, will that really help me in the future?

I don't know about you but it has been a long time coming to apply to CRNA school. I am so excited! Where are you from?

Jdiekhoff

hey JD, yeah I would keep the email that he sent you just in case something would happen when you go to actually transfer the credits. Hopefully everything will be fine.

Beedog is right on the money when he said the system there is antiquated...UC prides themselves on being one of the oldest nursing schools around and sometimes I wonder if they have changed any of their info technology since the late 1800's....when they came onto the scene....Like I said before..great CRNA program...but you will see what I mean about "the system" once you're there. I'm sure all programs have their issues ...Kaiser's is the So Cal traffic that already drives me nuts...BTW I have a friend that will be in class with you guys and she is awesome.....maybe I'll end up working with some of you guys if I end up back in Cincinnati. Good luck to you all

Hi jd

I'm from KY. I have been getting all my CRNA stuff together for a year now and I am keeping my fingers crossed. But you're right; it's been a long time coming. I've applied to 4 other schools (even FL) but I am really praying for UC. It just appealed to me more than all the others. I'm not top-of-the-heap by any stretch, but this forum has given me so much insight into the reality of it all. I used to think I had to be freakin perfect, but now I know better. Lets all keep each other posted on how its going.

Forward progress to Fall 2009!!

My grades are good, but I am worried about my clinical experience of only 2 years. UC is the only school I am going to apply to, because I can not re-locate. However, I did hear that texas wesleyan has a program in Louisville and Cincinnati, but I don't know to much about their program. Are you taking any graduate core classes to get them out of the way?

jd,

I am my BSN school to see if I can get some core classes out of the way. I have also applied to TWU, but they don't accept transfer credits. They want you to complete all of your CRNA courses w/ them.

2 yrs ICU seems to be just what they want. 1 yr would be cutting it close. And you can count the months up to your point of admission. So make sure you bring that out in your interview. Have you taken the GRE yet? Mine barely makes the minimum and I'm not sure if I should retake it. It was NOT my cup of tea, to say the least.

UC seems to want 2+ years ICU experience. At the most recent CRNA info session, the program director (WW) mentioned that they were "blown away" by a candidate with just 1 year experience, and they accepted her. WW made it clear that she was the exception. That being said, some of the UH SICU nurses mentioned that UC has accepted freshly-graduated candidates just out of orientation with that facility.

Regarding your GRE score, if you're independently wealthy, don't worry about it. Otherwise, study & retake the test to score at least a 1100, if not 1150-1200 (minimum score for UC Graduate Scholarship seems to vary from year to year).

As a UC Accelerated BSN student, I've not had any hassles with LC (Graduate Adviser), but heard a horror story regarding one of my classmates. LC apparently told her that the MCAT (maybe GMAT) would be acceptable instead of the GRE. Maybe for acceptance to the Accel program, but NOT for UC graduate scholarships. She was screwed out of ~$2500/quarter. Keep records/documentation of all your dealings with the gentleman. I'm not sure if it would really matter in the long run, but at least you'd avoid a "he says...she says" situation.

I am reading this thread with interest as I was going to post some questions here. I am in Lexington, KY and getting ready to start my BSN program in the fall at UK. I am an adult student (42). When I went back to school, I didn't know that nursing was still an option for me so took other classes. I just finished my pre-requisites. My cum GPA is 3.6 with everything, but have been on the Dean's List both semesters of pre-nursing. UC is the place that I really want to attend. I even thought about taking my BSN there, but with gas prices as they are now, there is just no way I can afford to drive back and forth and relocating right now isn't an option (it will be by the time I get through as my youngest daughter graduates the same year I do).

Because I am older, I would like to do this in as straight a shot as possible and want to make sure that I have everything I need as I work through the next three years towards my BSN. What kind of a GPA do I need for CRNA school? What is most important to take away from my education? I know that we need at least one year in ICU/trauma - but is one year enough to even be considered?

I know I am just beginning this road and am not naive to the fact that there is a lot ahead of me. I would just like to make sure I am doing what I need to do as I go along instead of finding out later that I needed to do something.

Thanks!

Sarah
