University of Alberta After-Degree Nursing

Published

Hey everyone,

I just wanted to know if anyone else received acceptance into the University of Alberta after-degree nursing program. It would be great to share info. on what we know on the program, introduce yourself, etc. I also applied to York, but I'm still waiting to hear from them.

As for myself, I'm from Ottawa and I received conditional acceptance on Feb 10.

Hey Eatyurmakeup, thanks for the post! I had a room offer in the NW area, on 68th street...near Eastglen School. Do you know if that's near the LRT? Also, how feasible of a housing option do you think that location would be if I plan on taking public transportation to get to campus? For example, would it take more than 30 mins to get to school? I'm personally not a fan of long bus rides and I was looking for somewhere a lot closer, but I know the places on Whyte Ave tend to be more pricey.

Thanks for taking the time to answer this! :)

Eastglen School is actually a few blocks away from LRT Coliseum Station; maybe 15-20 minute ride on the LRT to the Health Academy building? That's part of Edmonton Transit so your Upass would cover that fare as well - you may be able to walk right to the LRT station from home depending on your exact location, or take a short 5 minute bus trip. At high access times (think rush hours) the LRT runs every five minutes so it is the ideal way to get to campus in my opinion. Overall, I'd say that's a pretty decent offer in terms of ease of access to school.

It wouldn't be a bad hike in good weather. My brother used to live on 68th St at 119th Ave, a few blocks from Eastglen. But from mid-October to about mid-April it's chilly and quite windy in that part of town.

(PS... the NW thing is a bit misleading. Eastglen is more east-central than anything. In Edmonton, basically anything north of the North Saskatchewan River is called NW. Even addresses about as far east as you can go and still be in Edmonton are listed as being NW... Such as 130th Ave and 34th St.)

Thanks, Eatyurmakeup & janfrn for the quick replies! Good to know. Perhaps I will pounce on that offer soon (it's from a friend of a friend), but still waiting to hear from Residence services first.

Thanks :)

Hi eatyurmakeup, I am looking at a couple of apartments in the Calder area (127 st Nw) and the Elmwood Park area (82 st). Any opinions on theses 2 areas, I don't mind a bit of a commute to school as long as I don't have to transfer buses too many times.

Thanks!

pjkgrd, you should be able to catch a bus to the Coliseum LRT station from either of those areas. Since there's only one LRT route in Edmonton, any train going to Century Park will take you to the Health Sciences station, and any train going to Clareview will take you home. Just be prepared to be up and out early in the morning!

Thanks janfrn! Are they ok areas to live in? Not too run down or crime ridden?

Both neighbourhoods are side-by-side with the Yellowhead, which means a lot of traffic noise. There are noise-dampening barriers in place but I'm not too sure how much dampening really occurs. The neighbourhoods themselves are older, with smaller homes mostly built in the '40s and '50s, with lots of mature trees. A lot of the housing stock has been reno'd and updated, so really, the area is quite nice. Crime isn't a big issue in that area, once you get away from the highway.

Thanks janfrn, I appreciate the info!

Hey, I wanted to know how long it would take to get to the North campus at U of A from 109 St. & 54 Ave. using public transportation? Thank you.

Hey sw87, if you go to the Edmonton transit web page there is a trip planner option. You enter the address of your start point and end point and it will give you transit options with travel times.
