Unite nurses, don't divide us

Nurses Union

Published

during national nurses week and throughout the year, seiu nurses feel we should be united, not divided --with other nurses, with other healthcare workers, with patient care advocates--to work for quality care. why then, is the california nurses association declaring war on nurses?

we're renewing our call for an end to cna's divisive actions as the outcome of a union representation election remains in balance for 1,000 of our nurse colleagues at three las vegas hospitals. despite months of cna's lies and false promises the cna failed to capture enough votes to lure nurses away from seiu.

cna's raiding in las vegas is yet another move aimed to divide nurses at a critical time when patients need us most. cna is also actively trying to decertify seiu nurses throughout california and other states. in march, the cna waged an aggressive "vote no" campaign in ohio, forcing the cancellation of union elections for 8,300 nurses and hospital workers in nine hospitals. in recent years the cna also has raided other unions or intervened in other unions' organizing drives in hawaii, illinois, missouri, tennessee, texas, and other states.

this nurses week, rather than dividing the too-few nurses who already have a union voice, let's unite the 85% who don't--for our patients and our profession.

Why are you as nurses allowing the boss to violate your contract? There are several worksite actions that nurses can do in addition to filing grievances? Who are your stewards? What are they doing?

Your union dues are a tax write off by the way. Last time I checked we all need more tax writeoffs.

Get involved and work on making things better. Be part of the solution, not the problem.

I know you are a smart person who is resourceful enough to figure out ways to organize your co-workers into action against the boss.

Throwing your union out is not the answer - making improvements and changes that will result in long term power for you and your coworkers is the answer.

You are the union-nothing will change unless you change.

Worksite actions? Such as? As far as deducting union dues, one's deductions must total a certain percentage of one's income before said deductions may be taken. Those of us whose home are paid for and whose children are grown no longer have those deductions. Nor do a large percentage of the younger RNs just starting their professional lives.

In my experience, most contract violations at our facility are related to staffing. The hospital agreed to no mandatory overtime unless the staffing problem is a direct result of a serious emergency/natural disaster. In reality, they mandate to cover call-offs (not an emergency). Paying the inevitable grievance in many cases is cheaper than bringing in an agency nurse to fill the position. The hospital also agreed to staffing ratios on the floors. The contract expires next year and the ratios still have not been implemented. There are so many different pay scales in this "union" facility that the RNs have no idea who makes what. Serving Employer Instead of Us has not done much to clear any of this up, they are in fact, invisible. Most of the staff that worked in the facility before the SEIU came in see no difference, except that their wallets are 720.00 lighter at the end of the year so that the SEIU godfathers can continue to collect their six figure paychecks. I'm not anti-union, but I see no value in representation by the SEIU.

SEIU=Server Employers Instead of US

Nothing new here or there however you want to have it.

SEIU will help your employer keep all of you confused so the he gets what he wants. While all this also serves SEIUs interest. You are giving them 720 dollars a year to represent you. They represent you to increase what is good for them. Money, Power, Greed. Typical union activity.

In a few short years, the CNA has accomplished more for nurses than all other nursing organizations combined have in the last 100 years.

I wish I could join the CNA.

I do not see it that way. They have done a lot for filling their coffers, and expanding their power. But accomplishing a lot, I do not see it.

I agree with you for once 46. I was talking with a friend that works for them in Reno the other day and the wage scale they bargained there is ridiculous. You top out at like 34$ per hour but in Vegas its well over 40, for the same hospital chain. I know you can say cost of living or whatever but from what she says Reno isn't 14000$ a year cheaper to live in.

I belonged to the ATU as a transit worker for 25 years prior to retiring and returning to college to become an RN. The ATU gave us tangible benefits, negotiated good contracts for us, managed our pension fund in a manner which actually led to it being overfunded, and did not continually harangue us with political materials at election time. All of this for 21.80 per month versus 60.00 a month for no representation and political harassment from the SEIU. The RNs at our facility are becoming more incensed with take "pay up and shut up" attitude of the SEIU, and are beginning to speak more and more of decertifying the union. I don't know that going non-union is a great idea, but I would tell RNs that are thinking of unionizing to consider their representation carefully.
