Is this really true? I have a friend who during the entire time she was in school (pre-reqs and NS) said the unemployment office paid her bills. And she says they will even pay for childcare. Sounds too good to be true to me!!
Anyone know anything about this?
can you give us a little more info about it?
Here is the details I can recall. I do not were you reside, but you should call and see if they have a program like WIA because it was realy helpful especially when it came to time to pay the board and pearson vue and the NLCEX review courses, because I sure did not know where I was going to get all this extra money from.
Requirements for WIA: I believe you had to be over 21 or 25, you could either have a job or not have a job, I believe you had to be enrolled in a degree program or certificate program not the prereqs.
They will give you a voucher for supplies that the program requires (scrubs, steth, shoes, scissors, penlight, etc) they will pay for books but not paper and pencils and things of that sort. There is an attendence sheet that you fill out and turn in each month this is also how you are reimbursed for gas.
I had to have an interview with a social worker. The interview is basically to show you are serious about attending school. Then I had to attend an
4 hour orientations. Take them my transcripts and acceptance letter tothe program. Each semster I would take them my schedule so they can send the school the check.
My financial aid and students loans checks were for my cost of living during school since WIA paid for everything else.
I hope this helped
It is a really neat program for non traditional students.
You can call the workforce of your state ans ask for the information but I will give you some detailsRequirements for WIA: I believe you had to be over 21 or 25, you could either have a job or not have a job, I believe you had to be enrolled in a degree program or certificate program not the prereqs.

Thanks for the info... I will be calling them tomorrow. This may change the way I pay for school
I checked into this when I started nursing school. There are really strict requirements to get it. To start off, your family income cannot exceed 11,600 for the YEAR. It does not matter if you are not working if you have a spouse that is. I don't know much past that because my husband makes a lot more than that. I went because I thought I could get help being a homemaker for 12 years. As a matter of fact, after showing the power point slide for income, they paused to let people leave in which over half the people there did.
If you are really low income, it is definitely worth checking into. Otherwise, federal grants is the way to go. I may not have qualified for this program, but I did for federal grants.
If you go to the school's website and look for the financial aid office, the information should be there about grants. If you are not sure what school you will be going to, you can fill out a financial aid form at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/ and request the information be sent to several schools. Then it will already be on file at the school you choose. If you are going this fall, do this soon because the deadline is approaching to have it filled out. Just remember that you should NEVER pay someone to fill this form out. It is free from the government and financial aid offices will help if you need it.
My schooling was paid for by a Federal Pell grant, Texas supplemental educational grant and a few small student loans. There was no way for me to go if not for them because we could not have afforded it on just my husband's income. There are many ways to get help paying for school.
Hope this helps.
I know this is an old post, but yes, in Florida it is true. I cannot get subsidized childcare, been on the waiting list for a year; I would have to pay $350 per week, yes per week, to have one child before/after school, and then my 20-month-old full-time (they will not take part-time cause too easy for them to fill full-time spots). So, while working 20 hours a week (the only requirement for the subsidized childcare) PLUS taking 12-13 credits in college, I am eligible for approximately $35, yes $35 per week for this same daycare. But they have no funding now. I WAS TOLD BY THE SUBSIDIZED CHILDCARE AGENCY THAT IF I HAD NO JOB I COULD GET SUBSIDIZED CHILDCARE. THE DIRECTOR OF THE DAYCARE TOLD ME THE SAME THING! It is insane that someone without a job (I talked to another parent who got laid off, totally understand she would need childcare while looking for a job, but they have given her TWO YEARS of funding for childcare, cash assistance, and food stamps because she lost her job). I've talked to the director of the county's childcare agency, letter to congressman, etc., but yes, you can get childcare if you don't have a job!! This is August 2009 and the state still has no funding. The director of the Early Learning Coalition of Pinellas County, Florida, stated there are 3000 families in my position--apparently we would all have to quit our jobs, and somehow there would be emergency funding?!
I am not complaining about someone who has no job, is looking for work, has been laid off and needs childcare for a period of time, but what about the people who are working and going to school right now; what if those people, God forbid don't find a job, they still are getting 2 years of childcare funding. I never needed "welfare" before in my life, barely got by, but I did it without any help, and now when I need it, it's just not there. Unless of course I lose my job!
Sorry for the rant, school starts back up in a week and I have a 9-year-old who has early release every Wednesday at 1:30, in which I have school til 4:00, and my mom and I are trying to figure out how someone will meet my son at bus stop and how she could possibly move her work schedule to watch my children--another thing I never needed to do; I always took care of my own children. And I have tried to move my school schedule around, but everything is full so late in the game. I just found out last week I would no longer receive help with childcare fees by 9/1, so I didn't get much notice and only received this funding for 90 days. I am trying to find out if I can do my A&P labs online, but how in the heck to you learn to do reflexes and tests on a patient when you're learning it at home alone!! and when I'm in nursing there will be no on-line option . . .
I just searched to see if anybody was in the same boat to see what might have worked out for them, and then I actually find 'unemployed' and 'childcare' kewords together! Again, sorry for the rant, but if anybody has gone to school full-time, worked, and tried to do this without childcare?? I work at home and have to work when baby takes his 1 one hour nap and late at night, but I cannot go to school . . .
Does your son have any friends in his class that their mom would pick up your son and watch him until you could pick him up. I did this when my son was in kindergarten and I was still a SAHM. I would watch a friends little girl after school a couple days a week. It actually helped keep him out of my hair so I could fix dinner, he liked having a friend to play with until his brothers and sister came home. In exchange she would watch my kids on the weekend if I needed her. Worked out pretty well.
