In Austin there was a program called WorkSource that assisted people with school and childcare. There were very strict income guidelines though, so spots were reserved for those who were either unemployed or underemployed. I'm not exactly sure how the program worked but I used to see flyers up at ACC all the time. Where are you located in Texas? I'd search "worksource and ????" whatever city you are in and see what comes up. There is a similar program here in Houston too. Again, I'm not sure exactly how it works but it certainly couldn't hurt to call.
I have a friend who was laid off in Pennsylvania, and the state helped her pay tuition. There were strict guidelines, and I'm not sure how much of the tuition the state paid, but I know she was really working hard to get approved.
I know we're not Pennsylvania, but perhaps Texas has something like that.
Is this really true? I have a friend who during the entire time she was in school (pre-reqs and NS) said the unemployment office paid her bills. And she says they will even pay for childcare. Sounds too good to be true to me!!Anyone know anything about this?
i do know that unemployment is only for six months and after that they cut you off. there may be some kind of job training programs but normal unemployment will cut off at 1/2 a year. also, every time you log in to the website to mark you have been looking for work, you need to answer if you are available to work and have you been in school. if you mark you have been in school during this period, you will be cut off. they want you to work and will not pay for you to go to school. i know this from personal experience for a normal layoff. texas is not the sort of state that offers too much in the way of neo-socialist umemployment programs...
My education was paid for through the Texas Worksource, but it actually r/t a local hospital group's scholarship.
I decided to be employed with another company, so I'll have to pay back the 'scholarship', but it was the only way that I would have been able to go to nursing school at this time.
