Undecided Specialty

Published

I've always been interested in L&D, however I would like input on other great specialty area's. I am just starting with my pre-req's for the BSN program, but I can't help but look towards the future! :nurse: Any input is greatly appreciated!

L&D was very popular in my nursing class. When I did my rotation through L&D clinicals I didn't get to see a lady partsl birth, I got to see a C-Section. Well, I was so enthralled with the surgical aspect of it, that other than watching the baby pink up after delivery, I had a hard time forcusing on anything other than the surgery. Thus my introduction to surgical nursing. I begged and pleaded during clinicals to be allowed to go to the OR. Finally the day came that I got to choose either ICU or OR. I chose the OR and knew 15 minutes into watching a case unfold that the OR was where I wanted to be. Other than a 6 month stint in trauma step down upon graduation, that's where I've been ever since. Might want to look at it if you like technology.

don't decide now; you have years of school and clinicals to experience. your mind may change several times while you are in nursing school. keep an open mind; that is my best advice.

None of us can really tell you what the best specialty would be for you, because there are so many factors and it is so personal a choice. During your schooling, you will be exposed to many different areas of practice, and, by the time you get licensed, you will have an idea of what really interests you. One of the great things about nursing is that there are so many choices, and there truly is "something for everyone." Best wishes!
