Guess what!! I started the Accelerated at SLU this past TUES. Man is it ALOT of information!!

I started SLU too, I bet we have crossed paths.....

Friendly Ghost,

How did you do on that first Patho exam? I was so nervous and I over-studied. But it was a piece of cake, I got a 100%! I'm afraid to get too comfortable as I have a feeling that Chris will make the next ones a bit harder:no:

My name is Amber. I sit on the left side of the lecture hall ( left side facing the professor), close to the front

I am really overwhelmed right now! I like the instructors and the material, of course. But three tests in one week is killing me....

Amber, I totally agree with you!! I felt like this was hell week. I woke up this morning feeling literally sick. Now all the assignments that are due next week is another hill to cross.

I sit actually on the right side in the front row facing the professor. How do you think the semester is going by so far, along with many of the classmates?

Well this semester is really flying by.... which I guess is good in a way. I do an average of 3 1/2 hours of studying/homework a night, Sunday through Friday! I really hope that I don't get sick this year cause I'll be in serious trouble. I have met some really nice, interesting people so far, but there are definitely some snob types around. In general, I am happy with the program.

Hey FriendlyGhost,

Who is your Nursing 3101 instructor???

Sorry Iceman, just saw this post! ICU spots can be competitive but not impossible to get. I'm assuming you have an interest in CRNA down the road - best bet for that is to get into an ICU at a big teaching facility, such as Barnes or St. John's (a cardiovascular/cardiothoracic ICU will serve you very well). Having your BSN will give you a little boost above other applicants, but I definitely recommend getting a tech job at the hospital of your choice while in school. That's where it will really pay off when graduation time rolls around. And get on a floor where you will see a wide variety of patients and get a lot experience with your skills.

California is treating me well, thanks!

Ha, how did you guess that I have CRNA in mind :) Dealing with the heart is the most interesting thing to me, so it works out kind of nice that CRNA schools prefer experience in the CVICU! Thanks for the advice and I have a friend who just finished 1st semester of clinicals and picked up a tech job at St. John's and he really likes it. I'm thinking about doing that after the 1st semester is over so I can bypass the hospital's training for the tech job. I'm really interested seeing what Barnes has to offer and I'm glad that UMSL does some of their clinical work there, so I can see what it is like! I'm sure Cali is nice :) I have a friend who works for Boeing and is moving down to L.A. next month. AAAHHHH, school starts in like 2 weeks. I'm soooo nervous!

I'll add my .02 and agree here with what Becca has written. We are a class that just graduated with our ADNs and several got ICU/CCU positions. The majority were currently working in those units as techs long before graduation so had that inside edge, but I know at least one who was hired for a fellowship who has no hospital experience at all.

One trick we've learned -- apply early!!!

Thanks for the advice. Yeah, I saw that both St. John's and Barnes offer a fellowship program in the ICU/CCU. I'm going to keep my eye on them and maybe try and get a tech position with one of those hospitals during school. Thanks again!

In retrospect, school wasn't a piece of cake, but compared to this first few months after graduation and waiting to take/pass NCLEX, I'd trade ya' places in a heartbeat.

Just do what you're told, how you're told, nod a lot, read a lot, don't procrastinate, and keep your eyes and ears open and mouth closed, and you'll be fine. Take it all one day/week/step at a time and don't let yourself feel too overwhelmed. Many have gone before and many will come after.

Try to enjoy the ride, make friends; not enemies (you'll be stuck with each other for some time during school and you don't know who you'll get stuck doing group projects with, never mind working with after graduation, lol); stay out of the gossip and rumormill and cliques and I promise you'll be fine.

Really. The time will pass before you know what happened. If you get any breaks in that accelerated program, take some time to plan some fun things to decompress and get yourself mentally ready for the next go-round.

I wish you the best!!! :icon_hug: Check in with us from time to time! You'll find terrific support for any challenges or questions!!

I totally agree!! It does fly by! I can't believe I've already finished my 1st semester...seems like it was just yesterday that I was worried about getting accepted into the program haha! Iceman...did you get my message about books? Let me know! :) I'm excited to be at Barnes, too...I've always wanted to see what they're like. I was at Barnes Extended Care for my fundamentals clinicals during this summer...but for this fall for my psych clinicals I'll be at Barnes Jewish hospital...I'm excited about it actually!!! :) You'll love UMSL. You'll definitely never be bored! When's orientation for your group?
