Hi everyone!
I've applied to UMass Boston's ABSN program for the Summer 2021 cycle. Has anyone else? I feel applications are going to be sporifice this cycle!

At the last info session, they mentioned it was looking like less applicants for this cohort compared to previous cohorts at the time, but that was a few weeks ago and things may have changed. I spoke to a few current students. There seems to be a lot of confusion in the beginning with getting up and running with all of virtual components and trying to figure out what to learn and how to learn it. Since it's still a relatively new program, there are kinks to be worked out, but it seems to be improving slowly with each new cohort. I sent in my resume, only because they said they would accept them at the info session, but I heard nothing about extra letters of recommendation. Interesting...Anyway, best of luck to everyone!

Did the application ask for a resume? Or did you send it in separately? I can't remember if I submitted one with the application or not.

The app did not ask for one, it was separate. Had they not mentioned it at the info session I definitely would not have thought to provide one, so I'm not sure how much weight it even holds, if any.

I'm curious, if you guys had a choice between Amherst and Boston ABSN, which one would you choose

I applied as well, but I wasn't able to attend the virtual info session yet and had no clue about the resume. I have a lot of healthcare experience and I wish I would have known ? I wonder if they would accept it now? I read that everything is online. Is there still a simulation lab? They are expanded their seats this semester too I believe. Hopefully that works in our favor.

Personally, I would choose Boston, but only because of the location. I'm not picky though, I'd go anywhere within an hour of my house ?

It doesn't make a whole lot of sense that they would mention it at the info session and not ask for it in the app, I'm frankly confused by it. Someone had asked if they would accept one and they said sure, so makes me wonder if they even matter? There is a sim lab and you need to go to campus a few times a semester (orientation, sim labs for competency checks, etc.), but I think it was roughly 4-5 times tops if I remember correctly (apart from actual clinical). Agreed, glad they are expanding!

I also applied for Summer 2021. I got a good score on my TEAS, but my GPA from my first degree is not great, barely over 3.0. My Prerequisites are about a 3.8. I really am determined to get in though. My job covers tuition for state schools, plus the program is the shortest in length of all the accelerated programs I know of in MA. I understand because of all these reasons, it will be competitive.
I got into MCPHS for the Fall 2021 cycle. I'm still looking forward for a spot at UMass. The good thing is, there are 3 cycles a year, so if you don't get in for the Summer, you can always apply for Fall which just starts 4 months later.
In my opinion, there will be the same amount of applicants. Current events have people in need of cheaper options to get to the same goal. UMass is the cheapest accelerated nursing option of all the schools in the state.

I was accepted into the Salem State ABSN Summer 2021 cohort, however, I'm waiting to hear back from UMass Boston before I make a decision. I've done a ton of research and these two programs are the most affordable in MA/NH. I have until the 25th of February to make a decision for Salem State. I'm wondering if anyone else here has compared these schools? Do you guys think it would be worth it to call UMass if I haven't heard back by the 22nd or so?

Congrats on your acceptance. Nothing to lose by calling, although they might hit you with the generic "decisions will be sent out in the next week or so" response ? These are probably pretty obvious comparisons, but I have looked into both and I think it boils down to where you're at in life/what type of learner you are. At UMASS (since the program shifted to hybrid) you're going to need to be more of an independent learner, so I think being familiar with online coursework/time management (and excelling at both) will be key to your success. Salem State has been around forever and is an excellent program, you'll be in the more typical classroom setting and it'll be easier to connect with classmates, since you'll be together in person. Depends on how you want to learn, because to me, nursing school is what you put into it so I don't believe any one program is outrageously better than another. Speaking to current UMASS students, it seems like learning in this new way is quite a bit harder than anticipated so there will be a curve to get used to, but at the end of the day we'll all be taking the same NCLEX exam...speaking of, I don't know if the first cohort of the hybrid program has sat for their NCLEX yet, I think within the next few months, so it'll be interesting to see how they land.
I was accepted into another program as well, unfortunately paid the huge deposit, and ended up deferring my start date so I can see what happens with UMASS. Maybe put your deposit in at SS so you don't lose your spot, if you don't mind losing the money in the long run. Depends on how much of a rush you are in to get started! To me, UMASS is worth it for the price, duration, and opportunities, so I'll be trying til they let me in ? good luck either way!

Totally agree on all points! Especially that they are growing, and are giving you 3 opportunities a year to apply, it's a no brainer for me. Your employer sounds amazing! Where do you work? You don't have to be specific if you don't want to, is it in healthcare?

I work as a CNA for the Commonwealth of MA. Any state job covers tuition for MA public colleges.

Typically acceptances weren't given out to past cohorts until a month after the deadline. They're taking application materials like transcripts and letters until tomorrow, the 15th so they wouldn't even start reviewing until after that. Let us know if you do call and ask though!!
