UMass Boston- is there smething I'm missing??

Published

I've been researching the FNP program at UMass Boston and considering applying there for the Fall 2014 semester.

It seems like the best financial decision, but I have not heard much either way regarding the program. Is it competitive to get into? Is there something I'm missing. I've looked at other schools and some are nearly double the price...

Hoping for some feedback for others that have attended or have thoughts...

Thanks

Sorry to hear about BC, I'm sure it wasn't anything to do with the strength of your application, I know they had a huge applicant pool for the FNP program. When did you hear? Did the status of your application ever update on the portal? I haven't heard anything yet, so just curious. Good luck with wherever you choose to attend!

I got an email. What happened was that my academic recommendation never arrived (it did arrive at the three other schools to which I applied).

I was alerted 24hrs prior to the deadline and was then told I had another few days to get it in. It was spring break by that time at the local colleges and I couldn't get a hold of my academic recommender.

Finally, after some back and forth, they allowed me to have a letter faxed and the only person I could find to do it was my old boss. She emailed it in .pdf form to me and I sent it in but it wasn't on letterhead. Obviously, having an academic recommendation from an NP would have been stronger.

Like I said, I have a 3.75 ADN and a 3.95 BSN so I have to think my recommendation issue played a part in it because I think I'm pretty competitive. Either way, I've always had it in my head that my ideal choice would be between Simmons and UMB. I'm sending in my UMB deposit this week and hopefully will hear good things about Simmons soon!

I got in, but due to lack of clinical space, I can't start clinicals until Fall 2016 instead of 2015, making my graduation date May 2017, a year later than I was anticipating. When I called to inquire further, the lady said that there was a waitlist to move up the clinical year, but that I have to enroll first and then there was no guarantee. I really had my heart set on BC, but I also don't want to take 3 years to graduate when I had planned on only 2. I'm not quite sure what my plan is now, whether I'll put a deposit down at BC and hope I get off the wait list by the end of the summer, or whether I'll just decide to go to Simmons.

What is the deposit at BC? UMB was only $250 so I figured I would be fine losing out on that if needed.

The deposit for BC is $400

Did anyone here get into UMass Boston? Or, for anyone who has been there, do they ever send an official "package" with intro materials and cost information? I have received a few e-mails from them, but other than my admission letter, but nothing with a general overview of program, etc. Still waiting on Simmons!

Wondering if you ever got a package from UMass Boston? I just sent in my deposit check and wondering how the admissions office is with communication, etc?

Also, does anyone know if UMass assists the student in finding a preceptor when the time comes?

I have never received a package as of yet.

UMass assists you but I hear you largely have to work on your own to find them which I'm terrified of as I don't have hospital experience or many connections.

Will you be attending in the fall?

It's unfortunate that they don't help much with finding a preceptor, but I hear many schools in the area are that way also.

I'm actually going to defer until 2015. Would like to start this September, but no idea when this baby will make an appearance.

Did you get an email regarding orientation in August? This is the only information I've received to date.

Did anyone here get Into simmons on campus program starting this fall? I have been accepted but I can't decide whether or not to defer and try my luck at umb. Simmons is extremely expensive and the prices at umass boston is very appealing!! Any advice would be great!
