UMass Boston Accelerated BSN 2011

U.S.A. Massachusetts

Application due date is February 1. Anyone else working on this?

I just attended the info session on Tuesday the 11th (right before the big snow storm!), which was somewhat helpful, though the speaker seemed to be trying to discourage some people from applying. I think she just wanted to emphasize that they don't even look at applications if you haven't got all your prereqs completed, and that you'll be so busy you can't even think about having a job at the same time... She put a big emphasis on seeking 'diversity' in their student cohort, and I think it made a bunch of people wonder just what she meant by that.

One thing I've been wondering about is including a resume or CV with the application. They don't list one as needed or even optional, so I was wondering if including one could in any way hurt or help my application.

I hope someone else out there is going through the same thing and would be willing to post about their experiences. :o

Congrats, Mama!! I'm glad your wait is finally over -- and with good news!

I was accepted!! Anyone else?

Thankssssss!!! :-)

and Congrats TLisell86!

Did anyone go to the "Welcome day" ... if so how was it?

Congrats, TLissell!

I came 'fashionably late' to the Welcome Day, arriving around 2:30 (the day was scheduled to end at 3pm). I figured I didn't need the whole dog and pony show they were rolling out for the high schoolers who will make up their incoming freshman class, but I did want to submit my new student deposit and speak in person with someone about financial aid. If I'd been able to get there earlier, I might have taken the campus tour, but I think those were wrapping up by the time I arrived. So anyway, I accomplished what I set out to accomplish, but can't speak as to the day as a whole, since I pretty much missed it.

Interestingly, when I went to the admissions office to turn in my new student form and deposit check, the woman I spoke to was impressed that I was in for accelerated nursing. She actually said, "I thought your name sounded familiar", and went on to explain that they'd only accepted 40 students into the program. So I asked if she knew how many applicants they got, and she told me it was over 700! Holy crow, if I knew those were the odds, I would never have thought I could get in. Now I'm totally amazed that they accepted me!

Oh yeah, and the woman I spoke to about financial aid said that we should be getting our financial aid award letters in the next 1-2 weeks, assuming we've already submitted our FAFSAs.

And also, they will be contacting us about orientation for the program. We don't need to try to schedule one of those Beacon Beginnings orientations through the website or whatever it said in the packet they mailed us.

Wow! 700!!!! I'm impressed with myself too! haha! :) yay for all of us!

:nurse:

Wow. 700?! That's crazy. I recall them having 300 applicants when I was looking into the program two years ago. I would have never gotten in. Congratulations!

Other options for applicants who are pursing less daunting odds are the brand new Accelerated Program at UMass Lowell. Since nobody knows about it, the odds have to be better! In addition, Curry College has the oldest accelerated program in the region, an excellent reputation, and charges only $3K more for the entire program than the state school programs (disclosure, I'm graduating from Curry, so may be biased).

Can't believe how the number of applicants has jumped over the years. I guess people haven't heard how competitive it is not only to get into nursing school, but to get a job once you graduate.

Did you guys get the email today about orientation, etc.? Yay, this is starting to feel real! But I'm already feeling the financial bite looking at the costs for uniforms. And stethoscopes -- yikes! Does anyone have any insight about what kind of stethoscope it would be good to get for nursing school?

late to the conversation here...

hello all! I'm Ken, just got into UMB accelerated bsn 2011-2012

congrats to all who also got in, and to anyone who didn't, keep pluggin away - there ARE other accelerated bsn programs, and other routes to get an RN.

I went to the welcome day Saturday. it was a little trying at times b/c there were so many people. i kinda knew that I could find answers to questions on my own, and learn whatever was going to happen saturday with out the crowd, but...

it was my way of pacing myself, of getting started on this whole process.

as rloh961 mentions, there was an email today which hints at a few things to come:

CPR,

uniforms,

books,

CORI,

clinical clearance,

stethoscope,

immunizations,

and probably stuff like an email address, online user account for UMB online learning, etc. etc. etc.

what i'm getting at is this - I fully expect that there are a lot of things to do BEFORE starting school!

in fact - can we chat here, or is there another space online that we can keep up, like exercise partners?

e.g. i just emailed a nurse friend for her opinion on the Littman stethoscopes.

peace,

ken

just in case my opinion of welcome day sounded a little ho-hum..

let me tell you that the Professors and students I heard and met were great!

and the Center for Clinical Education and Research was AMAZING!

apparently plastic / latex mannequins for training are getting electronics and tubing which make them more and more lifelike. way beyond the resusci-Annie we did CPR on!

e.g. we can do suctioning on some of these "Trainers". and they'll display an EKG, instructors can choose from a library of arrhythmias, and there's lung sounds, coughing... it was actually a bit creepy to see the plastic dummy "breathing" in the bed.

honestly, the facility looks like something NASA would use to train astronauts!

exciting to say the least!

peace,

ken
