Hi! I applied to the UMaryland CNL program for Fall 2009. Does anyone know when do the acceptance letters go out? I have a knot in my stomach every time I check my mail!
Thanks!
Chris
Hi Chris,
I appreciate that! I was starting to lose hope when I read and heard of many people getting their decisions while I was still waiting. I was ready to move on with a different school and I know it would have worked out in the end, but who doesn't prefer their first choice?!
Can't wait to be a Terp!
Looking forward to seeing all of you this Fall.
Jesse
Can't wait to be a Terp!
Actually- we're not Terps I know at my orientation we were given stuffed crabs for nursing haiku and answering questions but not turtles. I vote that we get some sort of mascot like the fighting nurses, after all what could be more intimidating than a nurse wielding an enema bag and a 16 gauge needle? (Capped and safely handled of course)
hi,
Congrats to all those that got in! ) I am also interested in the cnl program, i plan on applying for Spring 2010. I am currently in a MPH Program and graduate May 2010. Any information about the program and what you think of it will be very helpful. I had a couple of questions though:
1) Did any of you attend the information session?
2) What do you think is a good gpa to get accepted?
3) why did you choose cnl and not bsn?
4) what do you plan on doing with ur degree once you graduate?
Hi MissM,
1) Did any of you attend the information session?
- I did not attend the information session. I think it would have been a good idea, but between work, school, and kids, I just did not have the time. I did speak numerous times over the phone with people from the program about the requirements, class schedule, etc. I am from the area and pretty familiar with Baltimore and the University, so that helps with some of the comfort level.
2) What do you think is a good gpa to get accepted?
-I did not have a stellar science GPA from undergrad (~3.0), but I also have an MS in Pathobiology during which I was ~4.0 and I was also 4.0 in my most recent pre-reqs taken in the last year (AP, Nutrition, Behavior). So I would say that no matter what you should try to ace your grad program classes, even if they are not specifically pre-reqs for the CNL program. In my case, recent good grades were more important.
3) why did you choose cnl and not bsn?
- I liked graduate school and I think I will like being in some more graduate classes. Still, CNL students take many of the same classes as BSN students, and I anticipate sharing a lot of time with the BSN students. The descriptions of the program and where I am in my life right now (I am 35) just sounded like the CNL was a good fit for me. All of the programs I applied to were either 2nd degree or accelerated programs.
4) what do you plan on doing with ur degree once you graduate?
-I would like to work in a hospital setting for a couple years and get that valuable experience on the floor. I am assuming most openings will be in Med Surg and I am fine with that. After that, I would like to become involved with infection control and/or working in geriatrics. I feel like the CNL will help me learn about creating my own niche in the quickly evolving world of health care and how I can most effectively help patients and my community.
Geeze I just read that back and it sounds like my essay!! :icon_roll
Best of luck to you.
Hi There! Here is my take on your questions...
1) Did any of you attend the information session? No, I'm currently in SC and it didn't work with my schedule... Work, family and school. If I could have made it I would definately have attended.
2) What do you think is a good gpa to get accepted? My UG GPA was 3.462 and my degree is in a totally non-medical field. I'm in another Grad program now and have a 4.0 there. I'm inclined to agree with Jesse in that I think my Grad work helped me out. My UG science GPA was also pretty good though.... I got mostly A's.
3) why did you choose cnl and not bsn? I went for the CNL because I already have a BS and want to make the most of my time and my GI Bill. I did not want to get a second BS and then have to go on to get a Master's. This may be more intense but it is, in my opinion, the most direct route to get where I want to be.
4) what do you plan on doing with ur degree once you graduate? My husband is still active duty Air Force. I've considered working at a local hospital wherever we end up and then eventually returning back home, to Southern Maryland, after he retires and working in the same community hospital that I was born in. Since I got accepted to UMaryland I've had several friends tell me that I should go back to active duty as a nurse. I haven't ruled it out but will have to wait and see. I'm 36 now and could go back until I'm 42. I can't see myself as a 38 year old "butter bar" 2nd lt though! :)
Follow up here after the term starts and we'll let you know what to expect... Best of luck to you in your selection of a program!
Chris
I have applied for the CNL program for spring 2010 and I've been accepted to the BSN program at Stevenson. There are pros and cons to both programs. The student in me wants to go for the CNL, but the mom in me says it will be too tough to manage with a family. Stevenson has night/weekend options. Anyone who has been through the program have any advice?
I also can't seem to get a real answer about clinical days/times. I've got the schedule for the fall and spring for classes, but when and how often are the clinicals?
Sorry to hijack the this thread!

While I am but a lowly BSN both the BSN and the CNLs have the same clinical times the first semester. We had ours the last four weeks of school and you either chose a Saturday or a Thursday clinical time...there might have also been a Wednesday in there as well but don't quote me on that. I think CNLs were more limited and had to choose Thursday but it works out with your school schedule since you either have lab (if you're a CNL) or nothing at all.
Make sure to stay on top of your schedule though- you'll know which date you need to pick. And of course we all love the six AM wakeup call on that special day where you get to choose clinicals. Don't sleep in till 6:30 or you might not get the spot you want!
