UK nursing student seeking clinical placement

U.S.A. California

Published

My fiancé is currently studying for her BSN in the U.K. Part of her curriculum requires clinical placement abroad in a hospital setting for 4 weeks at 37 hours per week. The placement can be hands on or purely observational. It is scheduled to begin mid February.

We are trying to find a placement for her in Southern California near Orange County. She is friendly, outgoing and hardworking.

If if you have any information of possible placements or advice on where to inquire we would really appreciate it.

Thanks for your time.

I am unsure about the crossover between the UK and US requirements for RNs -- even in a student setting.

Will even observational "experience" be accepted in her UK program, if it is not performed in the UK?

I would start there first, and ensure your plan would be acceptable to her program, before getting too far with plans that won't fulfill the obligations.

Also, as she is 1) not an RN and 2) not a US citizen and 3) her program is not affiliated with a particular hospital (has no relationship established), a US hospital is likely to consider taking her on as a helper OR observor as too much of a liability.

Just thinking out loud.

I'm from the UK. I've never heard of this before. Is this a new requirement to do an internship abroad?
