UK nurses overseas - maintaining NMC registration

OK, so the rules have changed, and CPD is no longer enough.

I'm wondering about how to achieve the "reflective discussion" part when there are no UK registered nurses where I work.

So, all expat Brits, please let me know how you plan to maintain your NMC registration. Is anyone agreeable to contacting me, with a view to maybe planning an email/Skype discussion that we both can document?

I'm in Chicago btw, so if there are any other UK nurses here, we can meet in Panera instead : )

Just wondering if any expat UK nurses have made progress concerning how we manage the new revalidation requirements?

There are no UK registered nurses where I work, (for the professional discussion ) and I am sure there must be other expats in the same situation.

Ideas please people!!!

Don't know if this helps but I went through my revalidation and I have pasted in the blank form I had to download at the time and have someone complete. It shows that you don't seem to require an NMC PIN number to confirm someone.

My apologies, I thought I was pasting in an image but it seems to have uploaded - sorry. It is safe though, honest.

Thank you, this is getting confusing!

I have written to the NMC twice to clarify this, as I am working in the US at the moment but want to keep my UK registration.

I asked if my manager here in the US could be the confirmer and they told me no, it has to be a nurse with UK registration.

I don't think there are any UK nurses within 1000 miles of here, so it could be a problem.

The NMC does not seem to have any answers for nurses working overseas. I want to be able to come home at some point but they are making it very difficult.

Do you have any old friends/colleagues from when you practiced in the UK with that you can skype? my problem is that I have never practiced in the UK and know no one- but I'm part of a neonatal NP UK group that I plan to ask someone through that to work with me. Hopefully somebody will take pity on me :)

I think that is what I will have to do, although there are logistical problems with signing off the discussion, I guess i would need to complete the form, then mail it to them for signing, and have them mail it to back so i can mail it to the NMC with the rest of the papers.

It kinda invalidates the whole purpose, as it would be someone from years ago, not familiar with my current practice or place of work.

So my future registration depends on a trip down memory lane!

Just noticed; after saying on page 1 that the confirmer can be any professional, the part that is signed on page 3 for the reflective discussion requires an NMC registered person.

You don't seem to stand a chance if you are outwith UK.

Glad I am getting out, these people charge us £120 a year and give us nothing.

Just had a thought; can you scan the form and email it as an attachment to a PIN holder, get them to sign it after skyping then scan it and email it back to you? As long as your actual confirmer has seen that you have evidence of a reflective discussion it "might" be OK.

May lose some sharpness in the scanning but as long as it is legible and legal can't see a problem, but the NMC will probably come up with a reason.

Thank you.

Having read this all through several times I think the only way I can do this is a trip home.

I will be home for a couple of weeks next year, and I guess the "professional Discussion" can take place then.

Probably in a local pub : )

But I wonder about people who just cannot get home, for whatever reason.

If its acceptable for me to continue to hold UK registration while working as an RN in the US, why isn't my US manager an acceptable person to sign this off?

Lots of holes in this badly thought out policy. : (

It is all ridiculous, of course. I guess I'm just used to it because I've had to jump through so many hoops just to get the registration in the first place- like taking the IELTS despite the fact that I live and work in a country that predominantly speaks English and completed my bachelor's degree in English. I am glad that I don't have to do the written exam or the skills check off though- those sound extremely onerous and from what people have written, not a true test of one's clinical skills and knowledge.

Luckily my revalidation isn't due until 2018- maybe they'll change the system to make it easier for the overseas folks. And on the bright side of Brexit (le sigh), the 120 GBP fee won't be so expensive this year for those converting from USD :)

So true, I wish I could pay all my future renewals now while the exchange rate is like this!!

Hello IS anyone available to do a Skype on reflective account so I can renew NMC license and I will help when yours need renewing.

Thank you.

I'm not in any great rush, I don't have to revalidate until next year, but I was trying to figure out how the heck to do it overseas. If anyone is up for a skype discussion that would be great. If there are enough of us we could start a facebook closed group for UK nurses overseas.
