Uk nurse wanting to move to America NOW :(

Published

Hey,

Im new to this and not sure how it works but ill give it a go anyways.

My fiancee and i are currently planning on moving to america. ive already applied for and agency and it seems to be taking forever. We started this process last year and it seem all the paperwork is taking longer than i thought. With every step its like im always walking into brick walls. Paperwork taking long, paper work being sent back, my fingerprints being rejected for poor quality 3 times so im still waiting for my ATT letter. And at the minute im starting to loose hope. We both moved back to my parents to save and thinking it would only take a year but the date we have it our heads keeps moving further and further away. Weve just been on holiday to California to check out the scenery to see if its what we want and were happy. But with the holiday im starting to get impatient and im even thinking of temporally packing in my nursing and doing another job just to get there. Ive even looked up nclex prep courses in usa n becoming a student just so i can do my nclex quicker. Weve just got engaged and cant wait to get married but thats obviously all on hold untill we settle down in america.

I guess im just looking for a little support and advice is anyones been through this.

Thanks

Are you marrying a premier league player? There isn't a huge demand for soccer coaches in the US or Canada. Unless of course your intended is in the same league as say, David Beckham.

You sound very young and very naive in your posts. Running away to Canada to get out of your parent's house. Really? That's how this all sounds.

Seriously!!! Get off my page if all you are going to do is be patronise me!!!

My friend lives in america as is a soccer coach and has a job waiting for my boyfriend, he is currently doing training in England incase he wants to switch jobs when he gets there therefore will have a good cv!!

This is a chat room where i OBVIOUSLY cant write all my plans so im brief with my answers if you DONT like what ive got to say then stop commenting on my posts!!!!! The reason why i started this was to look for advice not for someone to come on here and patronise me!! If you have some information then im all ears but all your comments have been pointless and frankly annoying!!!

What experience do you have nursing wise? You need to create yourself a really good résumé with lots of detail about what you do In your job. I have also put information about the hospitals I have worked in.

If you are determined you will get to the usa but it will just not be quick. I have a friend that's just got her green card but she's waited nearly 7 years for this. She will be going in September. She used an agency, her problem is she doesn't get to pick where she is going the agency does.

Have you started the process of applying to board of nursing? If you need any help you can pm me I have my registration and passed my nclex first time. I done all my registration myself, all the paperwork, got myself an nclex book and cards and managed to pass.

I will start my process again in a few years, once my husbands completed his phd in science research.

Well i do not what the agencys plan is but at the time of replying i didnt know exactly what they called it! Ive got a friend who lived in america and she is helping me with the paperwork.

My boyfriend is planning on becoming a soccer coach and is in training at present to increase his cv.

Candas not an easy option we were looking at it just for the reason to be able to leave my parents and experience something different and eventually move to usa after a few years. But as US is taking to so thats why we thought we could go to canada in the mean time as my friend said her sister who is also a nurse got there fairly quickly a few years back. If canada is a long winded process like US then we may not do it at all.

Paperwork can be completed by oneself (been there and done that with 2 states) on average processing with most states takes approx 4-6 months before eligibility to sit NCLEX is given and that is as long as your transcripts meet requirements and show clinical and theory hours in Paeds, Mental Health, Obstetrics and Adult. New York takes longer as they require CVS and CA do their own assessment, both these states have the same process regardless on whether you are initial assessment or endorsing licence if you trained outside the US.

Once you have passed NCLEX then you need to find a employer willing to go the H1b route (which costs lots of $$$ and they have to pay) or willing to wait the 6 plus years for you to get immigrant visa. With current job economics (many US nurses struggling to find work) and retrogression many employers are not willing to go through this. My suggestion would be get experience in a certain area that appeals to you and do as many courses especially advance courses as you can to make your resume stand out. All I am saying is it will not be easy and will take time but if willing to wait then could be worth it.

What visa will your friend be applying for for your boyfriend? I can't think of any visa that will meet soccer coaching. Suggest you read the US state website to see what visa will match your boyfriend and you can check out here Visas

Going to live and work in Canada is no longer an easy option for many reasons. Couple being Nurses both LPN and RN are no longer on the skilled shortage list so you would need to find a employer willing to go the TWP and LMO (temp work permit and Labour Market Opinion) and then apply for PR once working in Canada. Employers will not look at you until you have meet provincial college requirements (think of them as like the NMC) and have eligibility to sit CRNE. Most provincial colleges have processing times for IEN (International Educate Nurses) of 12 months and some form of assessment will be required and for many regardless of country trained are having to do make up courses. Only once you have become a citizen of Canada will you be able to go to work in the US using NAFTA unless you have started the process for immigrant visa after finding employer willing to wait the several years for you to get a immigrant visa. Unless you have lived with your boyfriend for 12 months, and can prove it Canada will require him to get his own work permit and as mentioned there really isn't the call for soccer coaches in Canada as well. I know several UK nurses that have been affected by the RN's being taken of the skilled list and now struggling to meet provincial requirements of extra study and find a employer willing to go the TWP route for Canada. Also Canada requires similar things to the US like clinical and theory in Paeds, Mental Health, Obstetrics and Adult

As I said it will not be a quick or easy process but if determined and willing to wait then it can be done. I initially had a job in AZ and had passed NCLEX and was licensed in 2 states but became affected by retrogression and if I was still in the UK waiting my immigrant visa wouldn't have come up until Aug 2012 and I went on the list Aug 2006 so a wait of 7 years. If you are prepared to wait that long and it is less time then see it as a bonus but be informed and keep current to what is happening in the US in regards immigration and or work visas (H1b)

It's not "your" page.

You asked for advice and our opinions. There is a strong history of posters on this site flouncing if they don't get the answers they want.

Read what you posted. You moved into your parents to save money for a migration that you haven't researched properly. You want to go to Canada to get out of your parents home. Your words.

Have you done any research into employment opportunities in California? Read the California forum. There aren't enough jobs there for locally educated nurses. How about cost of housing, utilities, food, owning and operating two vehicles (because public transportation isn't readily available or reliable in many areas)?

Going on holiday somewhere and loving it and moving and living there are two very different animals. I loved Tunisia, love to vist whenever I can, but it doesn't mean I should pack up and move there despite there being work for both myself and my husband.

I agree your friend needs to tell you exactly what visa he or she plans to sponsor your bf for - there are very few categories in which "soccer coach" would fit, simply because unless someone is a professional athlete or a professional in some other in-demand occupation, there are not many visas available. It might be most important to research this aspect because unless you do, you won't be able to travel together regardless of the nursing issue.
