UK nurse waiting for 10 years for USA

Nurses General Nursing

Published

HI,

Nurse here from the UK been a member since 2001. I am back! looking for someone on similar situations as mine. Passed NCLEX 2008, IELTS and applied for visa screen, however, retrogression happened then. So, I was stuck here in the UK, hoping one-day opportunities will happen again. Luckily, late last year, USA open their doors for nurses. A friend of my recommended me to OGP and signed a contract with them, took ielts once again and passed. So, my long lost dream has been lifted. I am again anxious and obviously asking myself "Am I doing the right decision here?" "Will life better in America?". Looking for answers and someone to motivate and enlighten please. Thank you.

Hello!Everyone!just updating my progress of my journey to USA. My priority date is open and I am starting to process my papers for US green visa. I can't wait to tell you that I will start my life in USA soon.

Specializes in OR.

Hi michaRN, I am also a Filipino nurse working in the UK, thinking of moving to US. How is it there work- and salary-wise? Do you think it’s better?

Hi! Im still in the Uk. Awaiting medical and interview. Hoping Visa Bulletin becomes active. What I’ve heard salary wise is better in the ?? better pay than here.

Oh ok! Best of luck to that. I’m just wondering if acquiring British citizenship would affect your EB3 visa application. Would it delay things? Have you gotten your British citizenship?

Hello guys. It’s been long time since I posted regarding my USA application. Just an update I am now in the USA since May of last year. Amid the pandemic. I finally made it after a long time waiting. To those who is still planning and waiting to work in the ??, don’t LOSE hope. If it’s meant for you whatever circumstances it will all happen guys.

UK and USA offered different in many ways.

Specializes in Community Health, Med/Surg, ICU Stepdown.

The pay could be better for you here, but it depends on where you end up and where you work. It sounds like the pay is set for everyone in the UK since there is only one system, here there is more opportunity to find higher paying jobs, especially since you have experience in ICU. Opportunity is one thing I like about the US.

But, I don't want you to have high expectations and be disappointed. Our country has a horrible history of racism that still permeates every day here. That makes me want to move, but my whole family is here and I am scared to start somewhere new with only my partner. You are brave! I've never been to England so I can't comment on the differences, but what bothers me about US is extreme capitalism to the point that some people make billions  while others are homeless, sometimes due to their astronomical medical bills due to our profit driven healthcare system.

Some people love the freedom here and the idea that if you work hard you can achieve the "American dream" of rags to riches. After seeing immigrants from Latin America work 4 jobs and sleep 3 hours a night for years to earn the "dream" of a 2 bedroom apartment for 10 people, I believe the American dream is one in a million, with the odds stacked against certain groups. Most of the billionaires here are white men born into privilege. You already have a degree and a nursing license so you will be able to get a well paying job. I am grateful for freedom of speech, women's rights, LGBTQ freedoms in some areas, gay marriage, and the delicious unhealthy food. I hope you are able to fulfill your dream of coming here and that you have a good experience! There is a large Filipino community where I live and I have really enjoyed working with all of the Filipino nurses I have met. = )

Specializes in ICU.

Congratulations MichaRN! I’m so glad it finally happened for you. Welcome to the US!!

Congratulations on your successful US application, MichaRN! I have passed my NCLEX since September of last year, and am now waiting for my priority date to be approved (it has been 4 months now). Is it always this long? And are you loving US vs UK at the moment?

Thank you. You are right in so many ways. My family are loving it here. Thank you for your insights. Some things still not clear to me but I slowly adjusting to it.  I regretted not coming here that early. I could have done more.
