UH MEPN 2012

Nursing Students Post Graduate

Is anyone looking at University of Hawaii's MEPN program for Fall 2012? I'm originally from Honolulu and would LOVE to go back and do this program. Especially since I would pay in-state tuition! :)

I've looked over the lengthy forum about the program from 2009. Is there anyone who went to UH's program that started this Fall? I would be quite interested to hear your stats (GPA, etc.) and to find out how many people applied and how many were accepted/matriculated this year. I will also be taking A&P 2 and Microbiology in the Spring and I am curious if that will hurt me since I am not done with all the prereqs. They say you just have to finish them by July, but I am wondering if that is really true.

Any info previous MEPN people can give me would be great. Thanks!

I can't pm either - brand new and don't have enough posts. I think if you click on my screen name you'll see my profile and then there is a friend request on the right hand side. I'm not sure, but if we are friends maybe we can PM?

I added you but can't PM

Maybe I sound like a broken record here, but do you all worry about the debt???????

I do!!!!! Do you all have lots of money to pay for MEPN program? I don't have any :(.

Mahalo, aloha

I'm hoping to use part of my husband's GI Bill to cover at least the first year. Recent changes allow spouses and children of active duty military to use the benefit if the service member will not use it. Otherwise, I think the cost would definitely be a huge consideration in deciding to do a MEPN vs traditional ADN/RN and than a MSN program. Also my "advanced" age is a factor in deciding to do MEPN. I feel I don't have time to spread the schooling out over 5 or more years before starting a new career. My main concern is just getting in for fall 2013!

In the information session last year, they said the student financial aid office was really helpful and they didn't have one student who couldn't get the help they needed. Debt for sure is something we all have to consider but in the long run I think it will be worth it.

I applied and was accepted. If I go I start in August 2012. I'm out of state! So I would have to pay 70,000 a year!!!!!! How the efff do I do that?!?!?!? Financial Aid has awarded me 39,000 in the form of loans. How on earth do I come up with the remaining. Not to sound like a privileged trust fund baby but my undergrad was paid for by my deceased grandparents. The fund is dried up now as I chose an expensive private school. This is my dream and I was accepted! Any advice on how to pay? The deadline for scholarships for U of H has passed. I know private loans are avaiable and perhaps third party payers such as the world health organization? Should I just start writing grant letters to everyone and anyone I can find??? Any advice would be appreciated!

39,000 in LOANS????? :nono: I know out of state is bad but COME ON!. At that price, even on an NP salary you will always have that cloud hanging over your head. Interest on the 39,000 in loans alone will be another huge hurdle. I can't even imagine if you had to take out the rest from private loans which are notorious for steep, highly variable interest rates and dubious collection practices.

Will you get in state tuition after the first year? This is the only way this school sounds feasable for you unless you have more rich relatives. Do you have any other offers of admission/financial aid offers you can leverage to get the school to increase your fin. aid?

I am applying for MEPN as well so I am curious to see how this works out for you. Let us know

Do you all feel comfortable with the bill for this education?

I LOVE UH!!!! so much!!!

but when I add up the bills for the MEPN program

it is literally (in-state) going to cost me, with living expenses, something like $210,000.

am i way off base in my calculations?

50K/year tuition for 3 years plus 20k/yr living = 210k

how do you all pay for this? all loans? does that scare anyone?

it scares me...... mahalo

only the first year is expensive...after that, it's just the normal graduate tuition rate. This should lower yours costs substantially.

I'm not sure if anyone will answer me because II know this is last year's forum but did you guys have to do a Youtube video as well or is that new for this year? I am just wondering if the Youtube video is replacing the interview or if we will have both? Thanks!

The video is new this year and is replacing interviews. My understanding is they did not do interviews last year but may have intended to at the beginning of the application process. I think they were overwhelmed by the number of applicants last year and that is why they made the change. I am a current year applicant but have been monitoring the UH MEPN website for about a year as I researched the program.
