UH Manoa GEPN Fall 2015 Applicants

Nursing Students Post Graduate

Published

Hello all,

I noticed there was not a thread started for the University of Hawaii-Manoa GEPN Fall 2015 applicants so I decided to start one!

I just finished up all of the requirements and got all of my documents and information submitted through NursingCAS yesterday...so now the waiting begins.

I applied for the APHN program for Fall 2015.

I know they admit on a rolling admissions basis now so I'm just anxious, waiting, and nervous about a response. I was told that it will take approximately 4-6 weeks or so to possibly receive a decision. It can't come quick enough for me!!!!! =D

Is there anyone else who applied for the GEPN Fall 2015 cohort at UH-Manoa? Wondering who may be joining me in the Fall of 2015!!

Sj1991, good luck with the applications. I know it's a whole process getting everything all set. About the transcripts I'm not sure how it works. I graduated from UH so I guess the transcripts are easier moved between departments.

Congrats edit1234! When did you submit your application? So exciting!

I submitted my application beginning in November.

How did you all format your cover page for the essay? From my understanding, in the center of the page should be my title, next line my name, then university? I'm unclear on whether I should write University of Hawaii for my institution or my current university? Also, did you guys write anything on the bottom of the page like the date or the name of the program? Please help!!!

You need to follow APA guidelines. If the essay is for admissions to University of Hawaii then University of Hawaii should go on your title page. I recommend you google some APA papers and see how it is formatted. This may help with some of your questions and concerns. Hope this helps...

Question for those already admitted! Did you receive an email asking you to fill out a form to verify the track you selected before you heard the news? And congratulations!

No... But fill it out and return it. Maybe there was a glitch in the system...who knows.

Happened to get an email from allnurses, and wondered...has the new incoming cohort started a blog? Sure enough you have! Ironically, we all seem to find one another. I said I wouldn't post anything, but there is some advice I would like to pass along to those who've been accepted (things I wish I knew). First, congratulations! Second, brush up on A&P, dabble into patho, become familiar with medical terms, and learn some med calculations. This will certainly help your first semester go by much smoother!

c-ya round!

Hi josephah, thanks for reaching out to the new cohort!;) I really appreciate it that you look out for the incoming new students. Also thanks for the heads up about A&P, medical term. and patho. I haven't taken any pathophysiology or medical terminology classes. But I was thinking of getting some books and study on my own. is there a book or a class for patho that you recommend at UH? I was also wondering about the NCLEX, how did you study for it? and should i study for it even before i start the GEPN program?

Thanks!

HAHAHA!!! No worries! We all look out for each other. So welcome to the ohana (family). Here are somethings previous cohorts have done, even my own:

1. Facebook - most everyone is on FB these days. So we started a private group (ours is "UH Manoa MEPN Cohort 7" and no you can't come in, lol). We posted our group name here on allnurses, so anyone who found this place could connect with everyone in the cohort. Make the name easy, so those who do a general search can find it. AND ONLY ALLOW your GEPN peers to join. We had Suzi, Booby, and Fred all trying to join. But anyway....this is a also a great way to setup study groups, get announcements out, etc. Also another benefit of creating groups is you don't have to be friends with the creator (or anyone in the group) to join. We use ours to vent frustrations, share news, post the weeks assignments, talk about clinical selections, etc. You might even find someone of your cohort may already have study material! Share! Your about to get on a roller-coaster that doesn't stop!

2. Med Calculations - As I said previously, someone may already have a med cal book (at least for our cohort that was the case). Meet up at Starbucks and review questions. Here's a secret...you can find med calculations online for free! There are 4-5 we use all the time. Find them and learn them.

3. Medical Terminology - Same as med calculations. You can find these free online. I'll give you a phrase you will hear all through your nursing career...."Use your resourses!" :wacky: (I'm kinda liking these emojis, lol)

4. Pathophysiology - We found Patho Made Easy helpful, but kinda pricey. Or if you have mega bucks, you can go to the Elsevier Evolve or Amazon website and download a textbook. Textbooks are usually $100 or more. Don't pirate anything and get yourself in trouble. That being said, the book we used last semester was called Pathophysiology, 5 Edition by Copstead & Banasik. And trust me, you will be buying your own patho textbook eventually. So pick your battles carefully.

5. THE NCLEX!! - :whistling: BOOM-BOOM-BOOM!!! :singing: Not to worry dear friend. If they keep the course next term, the will load you down with stuff from Kaplan. You will have test, exams, and quizzes with NCLEX style questions. You will be studying for the NCLEX from day one! However, if you (like the rest of us) can't wait and have to get a jump ahead....go to the Kaplan Nursing site and attend their free only workshops. They are amazing! And they give you free stuff for attending! So to answer your question, should you start now....?? If it were me, yes. The workshops are all different, so I would get into the habit of attending most all. They usually only last an hour or two, done over the web, are very interactive, and give you valuable insight...even if you're a beginner. Amazing stuff! :inlove:

On an even happier note...UH Manoa's (MEPN) GEPN Program has had the highest NCLEX pass rate in the State of Hawaii the past several years. So have faith. They will get you there! Just remember the GEPN motto: Always be patient and flexible! :)

Does anyone know how many slots there are for the FNP track? I'm still anxiously waiting to hear back.

Hi Josphah! REPECT!!

This is all useful info!! Thanks again! I will definitely look into those books! hopefully I can find some free ones or cheep ones. Having experience in the program. Do you need to do lots of readings and studying after school? how would you rate it from easy (1) to extreme difficult (10) on a scale of 1-10?

THANKS :D
