UH Manoa Fall 2010 Applicants

Hey everyone,

I just took the NLN exam this past Friday and I'm really nervous whether my scores are good enough. My composite score is a 136, composite percentile: DI-97, AD-94, ALL-95. I haven't prepared at all for the NLN exam due to finals, I pretty much "winged it"...so I'm thinking that those who have been preparing "hard core" on this exam would probably get higher scores. Does anyone know how they look at the scores and what people scored on the NLN to get accepted to UH Manoa? How did the fall 2010 UH applicants do on the NLN exam? It's hard to enjoy winter break being this nervous! :smackingf

You did great! I wouldn't worry about your NLN score.

Are you saying that you got 97th 94th 95th percentile? If you did, then you've got excellent scores. There are some people who apply for the nursing program who score zero on the NLN test.

DO NOT retake the exam. The colleges (and U) look at abunch of other stuff. Grades in pre-reqs. Work experience. References.

If UH Manoa is so competitive, why don't you apply somewhere else, where it's not so competitive. Why make life harder than it has to be?

Thanks :) But I lived in HI for my whole life, so UH is most convenient. & they changed the pre-reqs beginning Fall 2010, so they no longer consider anything other than GPA and NLN scores. I spoke with an advisor and was told that recommendations and experience will not be looked at...I actually work at Queen's Hospital and used to work for the vice chancellor at UHM, thinking those could "buff up" my application, unfortunately it wont. So I'm really stressing it right now, especially because my pre-req GPA will probably not be a 4.0 :cry:

You don't need a 4.0 GPA to get in to Manoa. Manoa is actually a little less competitive now, since there are more available seats than in previous years due to VA monies. Don't get me wrong, you still need to work hard at those grades, but if you have a 3.5 GPA or higher, with your NLN scores, I wouldn't worry. Just focus on your pre-reqs now. Besides, once you get into nursing school, your GPA will likely take a beating. :jester:

Thanks, petunia2016. I hope I can get in! That sounds a bit intimidating how GPAs will take a beating. How was your first semester? I didn't take Chem 152 because of the change in pre-reqs, would that make a difference on how well I'll do? I only took the Physiology and Microbiology courses.

I honestly don't think missing Chem 152 will make a difference. Well, it didn't in our first semester. Yes, nursing school is very difficult, but I know the curriculum will be changing, so maybe it will be easier. :D I can tell you that out of 64 students, I believe only four or five got an A as their final grade in NURS 330. But we all passed! Psychosocial was pretty easy, and so was our lab. 330 was the killer. Be prepared to read A LOT and study like crazy.

q: what do they call the person who just barely passed all her (or his) nursing classes? and who just barely passed the nclex-rn? what do they call the person who just barely squeaked by with passing grades? a: nurse.

btw, what is considered passing? when i did classes on the mainland, if you scored 75% or below, you failed the nursing program. is it the same here? and yes, nursing classes were much harder than the pre-reqs.

My semester has 60 students, which is more than previous semesters. I'm not sure how many openings there are for fall 2010. I would suggest calling and asking Tiana, Chetana, or Michael in the nursing department.

The only things that changed were more flexibility in which courses you could use as your pre-reqs (besides A&P and Micro) and the NLN now being the only accepted entrance exam. UHM has never looked at work experiences or recommendations. The admission score has always been based on three things: pre-req GPA, cumulative GPA, & NLN/NET/etc. test score. (with a few extra points for HI residency, SAT verbal scores, etc..)

it's a point based system, so if you're lacking in one category but do well in the others you'll be fine. i barely met the minimum cumulative gpa (2.5) but still got in b/c my pre-req grades and NLN were excellent.

I have about a 3.01 cum. GPA, I have taken all of my classes in California and now in Alaska where I am living. I REALLY want to move back to Hawaii, I have not taken the NLN test. I know that there is an orientation the beginning of April. I have about 70 credits done, I have been a CNA for about 5 years (obviously that does not help me though). It seems like the school is tough. I want to get my BSN, and heard awful things about HPU. Do you have any recommendations as to improving my chances of getting into UHM? Do you know how long it will take to get an acceptance letter back? I got accepted into a school in Anchorage, Alaska for Spring of 2011, I would need to know before then.
