Hey Shaunna,

Im waiting to hear back from UF (crossing fingers I get in), and I saw on this post that you are in the program right now. Do you think it is possible to hold a part-time job, even though they discourage having one? Also, what was your class schedue like? Do you have clinicals first semester? What hours are you in class from? Do you have any free time between 8-5 pm during the week? Also, regarding clinicals, where are the different rotations held, and what hours are you usually at the hospital for for clinicals? Also, does the nursing school give preference to those who lack transportation, or is it easy for people to get car pools to the clinical sites? I dont have a car and Im kinda worried about that. Sorry for all the questions. Any help is appreciated!! Thanks!

Hey Madden,

Good luck!

I have a part-time job, as do several other people. It really depends on what you can handle. The first semester (summer for us) was terrible, I would not recommend a job then. The second semester it is really pretty easy to hold a job. I don't know how it will work out for you guys with the new schedule, but it is certainly possible. In fact when it comes time to apply for jobs, most places LOVE seeing that you have PCA experience. It is definitely possible during parts of the program, especially if you're one of those people like me who manages time better when you have a little more to do.

I can tell you what the class schedule is like, but it will probably be different with the different program structure you guys will have. During summer, it was class from, oh 8 or 9ish to as late as 5, 4 days a week. The fifth day (Wednesday) was clinical in the morning, then class in the afternoon. Class schedule this semester is class two days a week from 9:30-2:45 and 8:30-1, clinical two days a week and one day off (although we have an online class, patient pickup, etc to do on that day). Last semester was about the same (two clinical, two class days).

You do have clinical the first semester, but it's super easy. It's only a few hours. You don't do patient pickup, you don't pass meds, and you wander around the whole time feeling lost and terrified with little to no idea of what's going on. Well, that was my experience. But it gets a lot better!

Like I said, there's usually a day off during the week, but it's difficult to do anything between 8 and 5 most of the time. If you want a job, it's early morning, evenings or weekends.

Clinicals-First two semesters will be a general med-surg rotation, next will be a psych/community rotation and a peds/OB rotation. You'll probably be at the VA or Shands for med-surg (I

Clinical hours depend a lot on the instructor. Usually you'll get there around 7am-ish and stay til 3 or 4pm. The last hour is usually post-conference (meeting with other students and instructor for lecture and/or discussion). There's a huge variability in hours, especially with psych and community.

Getting there: getting there CAN be a pain in the butt, but mostly 'cause it's so damn early. Do you live in town? Shands and the VA are pretty much adjacent to the nursing building. Buses go there (some later than others, which is where the difficulty arises). It's also fairly easy to find an apartment within easy walking or biking range. Plus, you'll probably be pretty tight with your clinical groupmates, so carpooling probably won't be a problem. However, you really don't want to drive anyway-it's a huge pain to park on campus. Like I said, the main clinical sites are right next to school, so if you can get to school, you can get to clinical.

For Peds, they let people request Jacksonville, so they are not going to force you to drive anywhere.

Sorry to everyone else for the long-winded post, but I thought maybe someone else might be interested in the info and give me more excuses to not study! :-)

Hey guys, I thought you might like to know that I talked to *** today and he said "they" would be meeting the first week of March to make decisions. I think most of us knew that already since we anticipated letters around the 7th or 8th, but still, not too much longer!

yeah, i totally agree. that is just crazy. How did you know you were waitlisted to FAU to begin with abrink?

I got an email saying I was waitlisted on Monday and then another today saying that I was in. I guess they were able to take me off the list fast because they require answers from people so fast lol.

Abrink- I was in a kind of similar situation. I applied to one back up school and my deadline to accept just happened this week. I ended up not going for it and now I am REALLY hoping on UF. Do you think you have a really good chance of getting into UF? What are your stats?

If any current students are reading this still, can you tell us what additional items (besides books) are required for the program? I know somethings like scrubs are pretty obvious, but what about other items? I know some programs require a PDA device?

I really don't know if I have a good chance or not. I feel a little more confident after getting into another program, but it is so hard to say because the website doesn't list average GPAs etc.

Did you end up accepting that school's offer or are you banking on UF? I am feeling pretty ok about my gpa... I am just really nervous about my GRE not being very competitive at all! I will keep my fingers crossed for us!

I did accept it, but only after I talked to "someone" (they get angry on here if you put in names) in the UF nursing advising office about it. I don't want to say too much because I'm really silly and afraid of jinxing myself lol.

I don't think you should worry about GRE too much. The impression that I got from the website was that as long as it is over 1000 it is fine.

Oh well that is good, I wish I had talked to someone, I didnt even think about it... I am just taking a big chance and will definitely regret passing up Drexel if I dont get in to UF! Also..I know that last year's group made a facebook account for people trying to get in/that got accepted/current students ... do you think we should do the same for this years group or does it already exist?

The requirements aren't too expensive. You'll need a stethoscope. Most people get one in the $70 range, mine was a bit nicer (a cardiology scope ~$150), but totally unnecessary to spend that much. You can get really cheap ones, but I think the $50-$100 range is probably the best.

Scrubs are a requirement, but not that expensive. You'll need minimum one set of white scrubs, but you can probably buy some from graduating students, Goodwill, on sale, whatever. Even a really nice set of scrubs (I like Grey's Anatomy-super soft) shouldn't set you back more than $40. I wouldn't even bother buying a colored set at this point because you can't wear them 'til the 3rd semester, and some (not many) clinical instructors specify color. You'll also have to buy the $20 nursing polo for Community and other stuff. They might say you need a lab coat, but I've never actually used one.

Other supplies-penlight and scissors-less than $5 for both.

I would recommend that you own a decent printer. Laser is preferable, you will print out A LOT of stuff. Definitely worth buying a nicer one. A decent netbook is also probably a good investment if you like to take notes on a computer.

PDAs are not required, but most clinical instructors will let you use them. Ipod touches have some pretty sweet apps (drug guides and the like), so I would think that would be way better than a traditional PDA.

There's really not a whole lot of other monetary REQUIREMENTS but there are lots of things to spend money on. Extra recommended books, t-shirts, hoodies, about $50 if you want to do the pinning ceremony. Immunizations and CPR class before the program starts. That's all I can think of off the top of my head.

Apparently it's about $400+ to take the NCLEX/get licensed, etc.

Shaunna, thanks for all the info! You are answering lots of my questions as well.

Abrink, will you go with UF if you get accepted?

IM SO SCARED guys!

I think someone will probably make one once the decisions go out. I think its a great idea - easier to get to know people.
