:clown: WELCOME :clown:

If you're applying to the University of Florida's May 2010 accelerated BSN program in Gainesville (aka class of 2011), this thread's for you! Applicants, current students, and alumni are all welcome to the discussion!

For starters, here is the program's website:

Looking forward to meeting more of you on here!

It's good to see others on here. I graduated from UF in May and am going to try and turn around and apply for May 2010, as well. My situation doesn't -quite- fit with the application criteria, so I need to talk to the admissions counselor next week and see if there's really any room whatsoever for exceptions (I will be taking two of the prereqs in the spring, just because of red tape nightmares that meant I couldn't take micro this fall. argh! :banghead:). If they won't budge, well, I may be trying for the class of 2011 if the boy and I stay in Gainesville another year. But I hope they will. I mean... I'm a UF alumna, still local, with a 3.3 undergrad GPA, 4.0 on my post-bacc work, between 1300-1400 on the GRE practice tests (I should really take it already)... it's going to be so frustrating if I have to wait another year because of one damned class.

So, we'll see.

I love this town, I love UF, and I'd love to hang another UF diploma on my wall. If I don't get in, well... I'd thought about Remington, starting in January, but in-state tuition is just too hard to resist. I'd likely wait until next summer and just keep taking classes... get Orgo, etc done for the CRNA program to come. :D

Update for any other UF 2010 applicants - I've talked to the admissions counselor and they are changing the program starting in 2010 (aka the next class up, those of us applying now). It will be a longer program, four full semesters, and will be starting in the fall so that the accelerated class will basically be paralleling the general program for the first two semesters. Same application, same deadline, etc.

What? Do tell more, I'm shocked here as I've been planning my life around this program for a while now. I couldn't find any mention of the changes on the UF nursing website. So does the program now start in fall of '10 and we would graduate Dec '11? That's a big change if you ask me. However, its probably good that they don't start with that intense summer semester anymore.

You might want to email and ask for more info. This is what I was told this morning, was told that the website is in the process of being changed, and this would take effect with the next class, starting in 2010. I know, I was super surprised as well. But it works out well for me, much better than a summer start.

To anyone in the program or applying: have you heard of anyone with under a cumulative 3.0 GPA getting in? I have a 2.9 cumulative, and maybe just over a 3.2 if you factor in the pre-reqs I've taken in my last 60 credits.

Just wondering if I should even bother taking the GRE, if I don't stand any change with my GPA.

About the program restructuring, I was really surprised- and bummed. I too have been planning my life around this program, and it definitely puts a wrinkle in my plans. I talked to someone yesterday, and it sounds as though there will be other changes (he hinted at the prerequisite requirements- but that's only a guess) that will likely be changing for future applicants, so I guess for 2011 applicants. I'm wondering if they are going to start requiring prereqs that are closer to the other programs in Florida.

I'm trying to look at it this way...It's a career, and in the end the fact that we'll finish five or so months later won't matter at all.

It's kind of crazy that they're changing it while people are applying like this, but the way the program is set up currently, that first summer's schedule is kind of brutal. I'm happy they're bringing the program more in line w/ the traditional BSN for the initial few semesters... I feel like it'll give us more opportunity to get a good, strong foundation at the start of the program.

I think you're right that they're going to bring the program more in line with the rest of the schools in terms of prerequisites and preparation. They're one of very few I've seen that doesn't require the lifespan psych, nutrition, etc classes... they're on the fore of the MSN->DNP shift for advanced practice nursing, I would not be surprised if they're revamping their BSN too to make it more competitive and in line with other top schools' programs.

And to answer the other question about GPA, I don't know, but I sure hope so. My undergrad GPA was a 3.28. Not amazing. But I've taken a heavy prereq load since then, with a 4.0, and my GRE score should be pretty high (my practice tests have all been in the 1300-1350 range) so I'm hoping that will sway things in my favor. The admissions counselor couldn't give me any solid numbers on the admitted students' profile, though I did ask.

I'm currently enrolled. 3.03 and 1150 got me in. Go for it!

Hey guys!

Just found this thread. I'm currently in the program and I thought I'd try answering a few of your questions.

Getting admitted:

I had a 3.72 GPA

1430 GRE (710 Verbal, 720 Math, 5.5 Writing).

Prereqs: Anatomy and Physiology-both Bs, Stats-C+, Microbio-A

Undergrad major (at UF) anthropology, no health care experience.

I'm pretty sure my GRE was on the high end-from what I've heard, most people scored in the 1100-1200 range. I used a cheap book (Barron's Passkey to the GRE, I think) and the Powerprep software to study for the GRE. I took it around October or November I think.

Program changes:

There have been little bits of information dropped about this. I've heard mention of changing the pre-reqs, so they'll probably be essentially the same as most other schools/UF's generic program (chem, nutrition, psych, etc.) I don't think that will be implemented until the year after next at the earliest.

I didn't know they were changing the program to start in fall, but that would be a tremendous improvement in my mind. The first semester is the foundation for the program, but it's so intense that you forget half of it. If I could

Graduating in May:

I graduated a few days before the program started-that's no big deal, but it would have been really nice to have had some time off for myself before. There were several people that graduated in May though-one girl even went back home to her graduation ceremony the week after our classes started!

Guys in the program:

There were 55 people in our starting class, 10 male.

Hello, everyone! I just found this and I'm glad I did. I will be applying for 2010 also. Im retaking the GRE thursday to try and get a higher score. I am going to try and have my application in by November 15, even though that adds months of anxious waiting. Right now this is the only program I am applying to. I don't know why I have my heart set on moving to Gainesville.

Hi, how well did you do in your prereq courses?

mostly A's, a B or 2

Does it make a difference when you turn in your app?? I hadn't planned to turn mine in until January, but if it makes a difference...
