U.S.A. California

Hello ALL!!

I am starting this thread to keep everyone informed as to the process at UCSF 2012 New Grad Training Program.

Good luck to everyone applying!

Hope we all hear some great news soon! :)

haha thanks pkramer, i think i was bored not having much to watch on tv after the olympics ended lol.

so true though that area of oakland wouldn't be a bad place to be, get so much more for your money, good weather and it'll be even closer once the children's hospital opens up in mission bay!

Haven't heard from the training program coordinators. I think the individual units will contact you regarding the specifics of your training program. Or so I hear...

Specializes in Hem/onc/bmt.

HI I am not a new grad, but i have interview coming up at UCSF hem/onc/bmt unit, just wanted to know how is the interview process? and how long do they take before they let you know if you got selected or not. Thanks in advance :)

Hey, like any unit hiring they ask pretty basic questions like, "tell me about yourself, why UCSF?" etc. They asked about five behavioral questions and two clinical questions. The nurse manager is very friendly and be prepared to ask them some pertinent questions. Good luck! I was offered a position one week after I interviewed.

@nocturncal, Thank you so much for all that advice! Such good information to know. Wow I cannot believe how expensive parking is at the hospital wow! I haven't heard anything about training either, it would be so nice to know what our schedule is like the first couple of weeks!

Hi everyone,

Congrats to those who received job offers from UCSF! I am very excited to start the program myself! Anyways, I know that finding a place in the SF (& neighboring cities) is hectic and can be pricy, but was wondering if anyone might be interested in a free space that I have at my apartment (soma/sb area) If you are, please send me your email and I will send you further details! Thanks and Looking forward to meeting you soon! :)

Wow, nocturncal! You really went into depth! I'd also suggest looking across the bay to Oakland (Rockridge, Lake Merritt, Temescal, and Uptown areas are nice) or Berkeley. It's a bit cheaper over there and BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit aka subway) to Muni (SF bus system) is easy. Lots of folks commute that way. If you have any more questions, please ask!

On another note, has anyone heard from the training program coordinators? I have only heard from Occupational Health and have scheduled two appts with them and have a new employee HR session later this month. When should we hear more about the training program? Thanks!

I just got an email with a copy of my offer letter and a tentative training program schedule for adult acute care. It got sent out pretty late in the day though so if anyone hasn't received it yet, I'm sure many will be sent out tomorrow and throughout the week!

And by the way, thanks nocturncal and pkramer for all the great information on SF! :)

Does anyone know the final stats for number of applicants and number accepted? It would also be helpful if some of you that got in (and are sadly unlikely to be looking at this page any longer) could share a bit about what you think they are seeking beyond good grades, references, and hitting it off in the interview. Come to think of it, there may not be anything beyond that, but please, use your imagination.

I've heard different numbers. But I think total number of applicants were around the 2400 range. Numbers accepted were around 40. I felt like I was just really lucky to be offered an interview. I have my acls, bls, pals, nrp, & advanced 12 lead EKG interpretation. We just went Magnet, and I just wanna clarify that it's not just BSNs that they're interested in. There are lots of ASN people that were accepted into the program as well. So all the ASN graduates, do not lose hope!

As far as the interview goes, just show that you're compassionate about nursing. Take your time in answering the questions, pause and gather your thoughts when necessary. I didn't feel confident in answering the clinical scenarios, but I think what really helped me was just expressing how much I enjoy helping others and the satisfaction that it gives me at the end of the day. If you chose nursing as a career because of a significant event that happened or encounters with nurses, DEFINITELY incorporate that into your answers. Have a portfolio ready for each interviewer (not just a resume and cover letter attached with a paper clip).

Hope that helps! :)

When will UCSF post their next grad program?

Can anyone shed any light on what's on the application? Cover letter, number of recc letters, etc?

Thanks in advance!

I'd also like to know any info.... Thanks! :)

Hi everyone! Congratulations to all of you that got into the 2012 program. I'm a senior nursing student from NY and I'm specifically interested in the pediatric new grad program. If any pediatric new grads applied/got the job, I would love any and all information! Please please please comment here or message me! I have a million questions! Thanks :)

Wow, they make these smiley's look really happy, huh.
