UCSF New Grad Program 10/2016

Nurses New Nurse

Published

Hi Everyone!

I recently applied to UCSF's new grad program that will start October 2016. I'm starting this thread in hopes to meet other new nurses who applied and we can stay in touch with one another.

I wish everyone the best of luck. Let the waiting game begin!

Hi everyone! I applied for many positions but I have recently interviewed for the ICN, my utmost favorite type of nursing. I've been reading on a couple Facebook group pages that people are getting called to interview for adult positions like OR and Oncology, with the interviews happening this week.

@Sodabay, BSN : Congratulations on getting an interview! Well, your update has deflated my hopes of still getting an interview. Too bad as I really believe I will fit so well in the Hematology/Oncology/BMT unit because I know that unit like the back of my hand as I was treated and had my stem cell transplant there last September after I graduated. I've learned things that a lot of new grad nurses have not by being a patient, not just from textbooks. I just don't know many tests, procedures, and scans through textbooks, but I actually know how they feel, what to anticipate from them, how to prepare for them, and how to effectively recover from them. I'm also very familiar with the daily routines of the nurses there. I think it will truly be a wasted opportunity if they don't even give me an interview. I'm really starting to feel defeated.

@sodabay how was the interview? Was it a panel?

@frederick_design don't feel defeated! They are still calling people for interviews.

Hi frederick_design. I'm sorry! I didn't mean to deflate your hope. The interviews for that unit that I mentioned were happening today, Thursday, but that doesn't mean that they won't be interviewing other days. My guess is that they will. Take ICN for example, they are conducting interviews on 3 different days (the 5, 15, and 17-per the manager).

Your unique experience has given you a patient perspective that I agree makes you valuable. Even if you don't end up on that unit, you can still use this experience for other units. Don't know how long you've been on the job hunt, but have hope and be positive.

Hi xd94! It was a panel interview, very low key, NICE people!

Does anyone know if any pediatric units have been calling for interviews? Such as Pediatric Medical units? Thanks everyone and good luck!

Thanks for that encouragement, guys =). I actually just got a call at noon and was invited for an interview for the Pediatric Hematology/Oncology/Bone Marrow Transplant unit this coming Monday morning.

For those who are still waiting to hear from UCSF, I can only speak about the pediatric hem/onc/bmt unit as the recruiters that I tried to contact a few days ago, only the one in charge of pediatric recruiting has responded and she only responded regarding this specific unit. She said, as of yesterday, that she had not heard from that unit yet as to whom they have chosen to invite for interviews. I assume the unit has just made their decisions today. Since today is the first day they've called in people, I believe this will continue on for another week or so. I truly hope the best for everyone =).

I will try to update everyone once my interview is over regarding the experience.

@frederick_design. Fantastic! Congratulations on attaining an interview! I had behavioral questions, some questions about why that unit, etc. You'll have a strong and sincere answer for why that unit. You'll do amazing!

@mj73 thank you for your response! I have my interview on Wed and super nervous. Did they ask scenario questions?

@fredrick_design I knew you would get called! Don't lose hope :)
