A place for individuals applying to the UCSF 2018 MEPN program to contact each other, share information, support each other, and provide advice.

Oh, I wish! I still have my last "additional information" question, then resume (I have an old one to start from), THEN about to start my personal and goal statements :/ It's been a busy month! I did just submit the first portion of my SFSU application yesterday (it has two portions with different deadlines), and my daughter started school on Monday, so I think I'm in an okay position... and I have been mulling over my statements pretty actively for a while.

But I know the feeling, when I submitted the SFSU application yesterday I thought "what if I remember something I want to add later?" I decided though that it was better to submit so I could get focused on my UCSF app.

So, basically no advice here, just commiseration :) I am definitely one to think every last detail could be the make-or-break, so I feel you, but /probably/ whatever tweaks you make are not going to push things one way or the other...

Thanks for commiserating! I am also applying to SFSU but to the ELMSN not the ELM-A. Main reason for me was the cost since at the info session I attended, they said that the ELM-A falls under the College of Extended Learning so the tuition fees are higher then the regular ELM. Glad to see one application checked off your list, it is a great feeling! Now only another 100 to go.

Haha, nope, I'm only applying a few places since I can't leave the Bay Area :)

It is a bummer that the ELM-A is so much more expensive, but I figure that between starting a semester earlier and including summer classes, I'll be working that much sooner so the cost should come out basically a wash. Also, I was told at an info session that because the ELM-A is more condensed than the regular ELM, they care more about grades and test scores (they want to be really sure you can hack it academically), and grades and test scores are definitely my strength (well, for SFSU purposes anyway, since they just look at the last 60 units... I wish UCSF did the same!)

Lol, I am glad that UCSF looks at everything holistically since my last standardized test was the SATs which was almost 20 years ago and it has been awhile since I have been in school. I am applying to multiple schools because I have sat on the other side of the table before hiring interns and analysts at my previous job and I know how hard it is for the selection committee to make a choice and how unexpected items can get you a yes or no in terms of admission. I have a good selection of schools I am applying to since I have very little healthcare experience (compared to other candidates) and the UCSF program itself is a selective program so I don't want to put all my eggs in one basket. But those application fees add up when you apply to so many! It helps that I am not limited to the Bay Area and it is definitely harder when you have to think about dependents and partners as well since they have to factor into your decision about where you apply. Hopefully, one school will grant me a place in their program.

For the other CNM/WHNP applicants, I did e-mail to ask about the practicum portion of the curriculum. Having training in practical skills with regards to insertion of IUDs and reading of sonograms etc were important skills I wanted the programs that I applied to teach and I wanted to come out of a program ready to offer these services to the populations where I will eventually serve. They came back and said that we will receive around 1,000 hours of practicum training and we will learn both of those skills (and I assume more) during our training. So yes to comprehensive practicum training!

@TangoDeux I finally worked up the courage to submit my app 2 weeks ago! It seems that every time I made changes to my personal and goal statement, I preferred what I originally wrote. So I stopped making changes and finally submitted. I haven't looked at it since, in fear that I will regret something I wrote lol. So best of luck to everybody and try to enjoy the rest of summer :)

Congratulations @abbybetty! Thanks for the advice. I agree with half of what you wrote lol. I add something new to my statement and it sounds better but then the rest of the statement then sounds worse so I think I will bite the bullet and just send it in. Some of the old threads mentioned that the server overloaded on deadline date as too many people tried to submit their application at the same time for one of the previous cohorts so I should send it in a little early anyway to be on the safe side.

Ack, that's a terrifying thought! Did it seem like everyone was able to submit, or were they just out of luck?

Edit:

I just saw the application says "Be sure you complete and upload your goal statement PDF well before the deadline. It is risky to wait until the last days before the deadline. " Eeeek!

I read the thread a long time ago but I think some of them might have called up the coordinator and asked for more time or dispensation since it might have been a technical glitch on the UCSF side of things which is why sending it in a little early is a good idea. That being said, the website is clear that the deadline is Sept 1 and that we need to submit our application by that date, no exceptions. They will allow more time for the rest of our GRE scores and our transcripts to be matched with our application so just the application has to be submitted by Sept 1st. I just logged in and found out that they matched my GRE score to my application so I have one more green check mark, just a few more to go and my entire application will be complete.

@rhnovak I saw that when I first started applying so what I did was kept uploading drafts into the system as I edited my goals and personal history statements so I was sure that I would always have a version of my statements in the system at all times so if something does go wrong, I still have something submitted.

Yay for your GRE, a couple more of my transcripts just showed up today, too! Are all your letters of recommendation in? Only one of mine is, two others I'm not worried about, but the fourth I'm wondering if I should give a little nudge.

Sorry I only come on here to freak out :) I knew it wasn't ideal to leave all this until the last couple of weeks, but that's how my summer worked out, so now I'm just going to be a coffee-fueled application machine/mess until the end of the month :)

Yup, all my recommendations are complete but I haven't seen anything for my transcripts yet even though I did receive a confirmation that UCSF opened the e-transcript for one of my undergrad institutions but I don't see it as confirmed in the system yet.

That's a good idea, thanks; I'll plan to do that.
