can't figure out how to fill out the survey or comment haha. thanks for making the thread
Welcome to the thread @orangemoon71. In order to take the survey, you will need to have posted at least 15 tines. One of the rules I found out about the boards.
Which speciality are you applying for and how goes your application?
Oh ok. I'm applying to FNP and my application is going ok. I am trying to figure out when they changed the recency requirement for statistics because I recently noticed the change and my Statistics class is more than 3 yrs old. But besides that everything is good..hoping there is something that can be done about that. How about you?

The change to the statistics requirements happened just this year. The 2017 cohort was the last intake that didn't require a recency requirement for statistics. We are the first cohort to be required to have taken statistics within the last 3 years. Most programs require 5 but UCSF requires 3. When I went to the information session, UCSF mentioned that they implemented this new rule because a lot of prospective nurses were having issues with math and dosage conversions as well as understanding probability and statistics in empirical research when they first get into the program.
They also wanted to bring themselves in line with other programs across the country that also have recency requirements for statistics but like I mentioned most schools require that you have taken statistics within 5 years not 3 but that is the new rule that we have to follow for UCSF.
I totally feel you on the rule change. I originally didn't have to take statistics myself until I found out that I needed to take it now because of rule change for our cohort. I even got the requirement waived already last year with UCSF because my undergraduate economics degree already satisfied that requirement. Now I am sitting in my statistics class studying the same information that I already know from undergrad BUT I tell myself that it is good to review in preparation for nursing. Since I am taking it in the summer, I will also finish the class in just 8 short weeks instead of having to take it during a regular semester.
There are also some programs out there that require A&P and the other science classes be taken within the last 10 years which UCSF doesn't require so at least we don't have that requirement.
Thank you for your reply. I understand the reason, it makes sense, folks need to be able to digest and properly analyze date and research without taking a bunch of extra time just to explain the basics...same with med math. My issue with it is that I cannot tell exactly when they made the change and I have taken Statistics before so thought I was good on my prereqs and was preparing to apply for a second time when I noticed they changed it. The enrollment period for summer classes had already passed so I am enrolled for Fall but they mention that it has to be completed by Sept 1, which I honestly feel is unreasonable because it doesn't give folks enough time to have taken the course. I am going to try to meet with someone and I am hoping there is some flexibility. I'm happy for you that you got to take the summer course, right on! I wish I had been aware of the change to be able to do that..hoping for the best on that.
Besides that, I believe all my other pre-reqs are up to date and I am focusing my whole attention on my goal statement and the additional background info. And also trying to find scholarships! Are you applying to any other programs? What specialty are you going for? Best to you in finishing that stats class haha.

Unfortunately, they made the change to the website around mid-2016. I don't know the exact date but it should be pretty close. I know this because I was checking out the website and deliberately went to a 2nd info session in Sept 2016 to make sure nothing else had changed except the Statistics requirements because they didn't say anything about upcoming changes when I went to my first info session in March 2015.
Good luck and I hope you find a way to satisfy the requirement.
Hi! I'm happy to have found this thread. I'm applying for the FNP track and am working on my personal history statement. Does anyone know how long this has to be? The goal statement needs to be two pages per the website, but there's no specification for the personal history one.
Last summer I had to retake Statistics after finding out that they had changed their recency requirement. Although I finished up with my pre-reqs last summer, I decided to hold off on my application as I wanted to gain more experience working with patients and providers and really find out which specialty was best for me. Best of luck to those taking classes this summer and applying! Looking forward to hearing about others :)

Hi @4tomorrow, welcome to the thread, glad you could join us.
I remember some previous applicants talking about the length of the personal history statement. The general consensus that I found was that the personal history statement is shorter then the goal statement with comments stating that the lengths that they submitted ranged from a few paragraphs to a page. Will do a search and see if I can find the specific threads that talk about the length of the personal history statement. I know I saw a few from the previous MEPN applicants.
To help others out, here are some comments from past MEPNs about how they viewed the personal history statement versus the goal statement. They helped me focus on the scope of each of the statements and what UCSF wants from each, hopefully this will help everyone out and provide clarity on the difference between the two.
From the 2014 UCSF MEPN thread:
As for the two different statements they ask for, my understanding is that the goal statement is more related to your professional goals, and would include why you chose the nursing profession and where you see yourself working in the future. And the personal history is just that- you would talk about how your life experiences drew you to nursing. At least thats how I understand it! But of course mine have some overlap too :-)
From 2016 UCSF MEPN thread (I found this one to be particularly helpful):
I saw on one of these forums a distinction that's been helpful in shaping them: the goal statement should focus on why nursing is a good fit for you, and the personal statement is more about how you are a good fit for nursing.

I think there's no specification regarding the personal history because each experience is unique and as such some applicants will have certain experiences that perhaps others might not be able to speak to. The thing to remember is to be as concise as possible and tie it all back to the journey and calling towards the profession, especially the track that you've chosen.
