With just a few weeks to go before the application opens...

Any thoughts, questions, advice or information to share as we anxiously prepare?

I received an invitation today as well for the FNP specialty by mail. Good luck to all who will be interviewing! :)

Congrats you guys! Still waiting to hear and anxiously checking my mailbox every day. How will you be preparing for the interview?

Hi all! I received my invitation to interview for the PNP specialty. Looking forward to meeting people next month! :-)

Unfortunately the roommate who has our mailbox key will be out of town for a couple days, so I'll have to wait to check the mail until then. I live in Washington. Eeeeek - the anticipation! Congratulations to everyone who has an interview so far!

Hi Marmite,

I just got my interview invite for the PMHNP speciality! I would love to hear more of your thoughts on how to adequately prepare, if possible! I know you're probably extremely busy. Thank you!

I got an invitation to interview today for the PMHNP specialty as well! Beyond ecstatic! I was literally jumping up and down in my apartment!

There are some old interview topics in the 2016 MEPN thread I'm going to look at. Time to prepare! Good luck everyone!

Hello Potential MEPNs,

Congratulations to those of you who have heard back about an interview. Chances are that one of my colleagues or I may be meeting you during the interview process. I remember how excited and nervous I was when I found out. If it is the same as last year, the interview will be conducted with two individuals, a member of the UCSF nursing faculty and an alumni of the program or someone affiliated with UCSF. Everyone is asked the same set of questions, approximately 25 or so, and the only way to really prepare for it is to know why you want to come to UCSF, why you want to be a nurse, and what you anticipate doing in the future. Take some time to look over the school's website and be sure you understand something about the role of a nurse practitioner. That's it for now! I wish everyone luck. And for those of you who didn't get an interview, please don't despair. A number of my classmates applied two times before they got in.

You can also look at this blog for more info about the interview. This is what I looked at when I applied. Be sure to scroll down.

The One Year Nurse, a UCSF MEPN student's journey

I wrote down a couple of thoughts in a separate posting, but I also wanted to say that the most important thing you can do is just be yourself. I know it sounds a bit cheesy, but the truth is that they are looking to match a great class. UCSF has its challenges - just like any other nursing school - but the one thing they did AMAZINGLY well was pick a cohort. I love my classmates, and they are some of the funniest and smartest people I know. You will come to depend upon them as much I do, especially your clinical groups to which you will be assigned from day one of the program. It's kind of like Hogwarts, these groups are really like your family members and you will spend much of your MEPN year together with them. As for the interview itself, there are some questions you won't be able to prepare in advance. But there are some questions you need to know cold: Why do you want to be a nurse? Why do you want to be a nurse practitioner? Why not a doctor? Why UCSF? These are the most important questions for which you need answers.

I just finished my finals today and am halfway toward becoming an RN. This program moves FAST!

Marmite,

Thank you, as always, for your insight! I've found your information to be incredibly helpful during this process. Do you have any tips on combatting some of the anxieties associated with interviewing? When I get especially nervous, I tend to babble and lose my train of thought. Obviously preparing as much as possible will be helpful for this, but what about the questions we aren't as prepared for? I have limited interview skills and often steer away from speaking in front of groups. I will definitely need to work on this over the next 7 weeks.

Congratulations on competing your finals! Hopefully you have some free time to focus on yourself.

:-)

Hi all! I also received an invite to interview for the PMHNP specialty. I'm so excited! Although I am surprised to hear that we'll be asked 25 questions in 45 minutes! I suppose I'll have to work on answering questions succinctly.

When is your interview? I'm interviewing for PMHNP January 27th.
