The MEPN deadline is less than 2 months away, so I thought I'd get a thread started for us 2012 hopefuls!
I'm a first time applicant to the WHNP/CNM specialty, and feel like I've been getting ready to submit this application for so long! I've been working abroad for a public health NGO for the past couple of years and am a trained birth doula. I've finished up all of my prereqs and GREs, selected people for recommendations (including a slightly awkward visit to my undergraduate advisor...), so now I'm just drafting my essays. Does anyone even know what the application is supposed to look like this year? I'm just going off samples I've seen from previous years.
Some days I feel sort of confident about my chances, and other days I feel as though this is a total shot in the dark and definitely not going to work out!
Any other hopefuls out there? And anyone know when the application is actually going to open?
I just submitted mine too. I was putting off goal and personal history statements till the last minute. As about transcripts received or not, I asked UCSF and they told me that we won't able to see if transcripts were received until the application is locked. So, if you mailed them, they are there. As I'm a bit paranoid, I went to hand them in in person last week.
Oh, BTW I'm applying for Acure Care NP route.
I just hit submit. phew! of course i'm worrying that i missed a typo or didn't word something in the best way possible. like my husband keeps on telling me, you just have to let it go. now the months of waiting begins! i'm hoping that this year will be my year. i applied under the CNM/WHNP track. Anyone else relieved this part is over??
I also applied to Samuel Merritt ABSN program yesterday, which is just Bachelor's in Nursing in 1 year.
Back to the application... on Tuesday I sat down to finish up my goal statement and opened up Cardiovascular Nurse Specialist specialty webpage that I initially was thinking about. Guess what, they posted an announcement that this specialty doesn't accept applicants this year and Critical Care/Trauma too. I was shocked. When I went to the Info Session in May, they mentioned which specialties are closed this year, and Cardiovascular and Critical Care were open. I called their office right away on Tuesday, they said that just recently they made lots of changes. Isn't it "nice"? At least I had two days to change to Acute Care NP because I want to be in ICU anyways. Yet, I feel these last minute changes are not fair.
Congrats to everyone who just submitted their apps! Anyone else taking up a new hobby for distraction purposes? :)
ElenaH - I'm really sorry that happened to you. I think that, unfortunately, this is one of the problems with attending a UC school these days - California's broke. UCSF's budget has certainly been severely impacted and I'm sure they're having to make tough decisions about their budget and what programs the can offer.
This is actually something that makes me nervous. I spoke to a MEPN student who is now in the WHNP/CNM specialty, and she said that she takes certain classes online, and that she and other classmates have actually agitated for more time in a classroom with an instructor!
UCSF may be a state school, but at least for me as an out of state resident (for the first year of the program) it isn't a cheap education. I've calculated that it will cost over $80K for the whole program - and for that amount of money, I want to be in a classroom learning from a professor. I did some of my prereqs online, and really didn't like it.

I applied to the Cardiovascular specialty also! But I was not aware that they are not accepting for 2012-2013! I locked my application a week ago... do you know when UCSF updated that they are not accepting? I don't even know what I should do at this point since I already submitted everything and my essays were tailored for this specialty. I definitely agree that the last minute changes are a bit ridiculous.
jcsong,
Oh, my... at least I caught it on time. I always wait until the very last minute, which is usually a horrible thing. I'm sorry that you didn't notice the change. Why did they do this to us? I understand, LookingAhead is right, that UC system is in crisis but hey... why couldn't they make announcements on the main page for MEPN program where it's easy to see them?
Why don't you call them and tell that what's happened. Maybe they will give a chance to change your specialty.
Just wanted to check in with everyone :) Still working on other apps - by far, UCSF so far seems like it is the most streamlined app process.
Regarding the transcripts, do we contact them to verify if they received them? Or will they contact us if there are things missing. My app currently says "Under Review"
Doing good, dedicatedone. :) It's somehow a relief to know that one of the app deadlines has passed and that they've got everything for review, just so I know something is happening!
I believe they contact you if anything is missing. I wouldn't stress about it for now - I happen to know for certain that they have all of my transcripts and recommendations, and the online app doesn't reflect that in any way.
t_heart - from previous threads it seems like they send out interview notifications in early/mid-December, then the interviews are in mid/late January, and they send final decisions in late February/early March.
Long wait ahead. Ever consider taking up knitting? :)

How do you know they have all of your transcripts? Did you confirm with UCSF? I wonder if they look down upon sending an email asking if they got everything. I think with so many applicants - they would probably be annoyed haha
Knitting! That's exactly what I need in Souther California...more like we're searching for water and trying to stay cool in 100+ degree weather. EEK!

Just locked and loaded my application. Maybe it's the lack of sleep fine tuning my personal history statement but not as stressful pushing the submit button. As I went to submit, I ended up scraping the WHOLE thing and starting anew but it was totally worth it.
Congrats to those who submitted early!!! You were definitely on top of it.
Question though: The transcript status, "last updated [sAID DATE]" means they did receive the transcripts yes? What would it say if the transcripts were not received?
