The MEPN deadline is less than 2 months away, so I thought I'd get a thread started for us 2012 hopefuls!
I'm a first time applicant to the WHNP/CNM specialty, and feel like I've been getting ready to submit this application for so long! I've been working abroad for a public health NGO for the past couple of years and am a trained birth doula. I've finished up all of my prereqs and GREs, selected people for recommendations (including a slightly awkward visit to my undergraduate advisor...), so now I'm just drafting my essays. Does anyone even know what the application is supposed to look like this year? I'm just going off samples I've seen from previous years.
Some days I feel sort of confident about my chances, and other days I feel as though this is a total shot in the dark and definitely not going to work out!
Any other hopefuls out there? And anyone know when the application is actually going to open?
I would urge you nor to stress too much about the GRE if your scores are within the posted range. They really do look at the application holistically. The faculty readers spend a great deal of time considering you as a whole, not just a gpa or a GRE score. This much I do know- the midwife specialty is very, very competitive. The women I Know in the program all had some pretty serious experience with laboring women, more than just being a doula. I think the quality of your experience and your ability to articulate it in your statement will be much more important than your GRE score.
If you are more interested in women's health (rather than birthin' babies) I would seriously consider an NP track, either anp or fnp. Many NPs work in this area.
I'm not applying until next fall. Right now I'm trying to decide whether to go CNM/WHNP or FNP. What do you mean by "serious experience with laboring women?" Just trying to get a more detailed idea of the typical profile of a successful applicant.
umichan - I believe that's the case.
I've just locked my application for the second time - did anyone else get that message about the payment processing error/applications being unlocked/please pay again and lock again?!
Given how nervous it made me to submit my app the first time, submitting it a second time wasn't something I was looking forward to. :)
Good luck to everyone still finishing up!!
Looking ahead--I agree! Stressful! Fortunately this person is my fifth recommender.
I talked to the office this morning and will share what they said in case anyone has similar questions:
If you list 5 recommenders and one does not come through it is not held against you. It happens all the time.
Don't worry about GRE scores not being received--after your application is in they will contact you to alert you of things that are missing.
What a relief it is to press submit! Good luck everyone.
