2012 UCSF MEPN Applicants

Published

The MEPN deadline is less than 2 months away, so I thought I'd get a thread started for us 2012 hopefuls!

I'm a first time applicant to the WHNP/CNM specialty, and feel like I've been getting ready to submit this application for so long! I've been working abroad for a public health NGO for the past couple of years and am a trained birth doula. I've finished up all of my prereqs and GREs, selected people for recommendations (including a slightly awkward visit to my undergraduate advisor...), so now I'm just drafting my essays. Does anyone even know what the application is supposed to look like this year? I'm just going off samples I've seen from previous years.

Some days I feel sort of confident about my chances, and other days I feel as though this is a total shot in the dark and definitely not going to work out!

Any other hopefuls out there? And anyone know when the application is actually going to open?

Woohoo! Congrats on submitting!!

Congrats cpsnap! I definitely can relate to the goal statement haha....working on the personal history statement. Should be submitting by tomorrow or Monday. EEK! They're better not be any last minute problems.

I would urge you nor to stress too much about the GRE if your scores are within the posted range. They really do look at the application holistically. The faculty readers spend a great deal of time considering you as a whole, not just a gpa or a GRE score.

This much I do know- the midwife specialty is very, very competitive. The women I Know in the program all had some pretty serious experience with laboring women, more than just being a doula. I think the quality of your experience and your ability to articulate it in your statement will be much more important than your GRE score.

If you are more interested in women's health (rather than birthin' babies) I would seriously consider an NP track, either anp or fnp. Many NPs work in this area.

I'm not applying until next fall. Right now I'm trying to decide whether to go CNM/WHNP or FNP. What do you mean by "serious experience with laboring women?" Just trying to get a more detailed idea of the typical profile of a successful applicant.

OK--so reccomendations must be uploaded by the deadline?

umichan - I believe that's the case.

I've just locked my application for the second time - did anyone else get that message about the payment processing error/applications being unlocked/please pay again and lock again?!

Given how nervous it made me to submit my app the first time, submitting it a second time wasn't something I was looking forward to. :)

Good luck to everyone still finishing up!!

I'm still finalizing my application. This thread has been helpful for me. Thanks for all of the suggestions, and best of luck to all.

Thanks for the reply! Well, I am all done with my things but I have one recommender who is really cutting it close! On the application it says that it is due at 11:59am--is that right? Not pm? IF anyone knows please respond!

did anyone else get that message about the payment processing error/applications being unlocked/please pay again and lock again?!

What!?! that is the LAST message I want to see as I go to submit. Thanks for the heads up, I would have freaked out if I got that.

umichan - it probably is 11:59pm, but I think you should feel free to tell your recommended that it's AM. Leaving it to the last 12 hours is beyond cutting it close...

Looking ahead--I agree! Stressful! Fortunately this person is my fifth recommender.

I talked to the office this morning and will share what they said in case anyone has similar questions:

If you list 5 recommenders and one does not come through it is not held against you. It happens all the time.

Don't worry about GRE scores not being received--after your application is in they will contact you to alert you of things that are missing.

What a relief it is to press submit! Good luck everyone.

congrats on submitting, umichan!!

Here goes round 2! About to submit for CNM/WHNP I am *really* really hoping that more students who are parents are accepted into the program this year.
