Hi,
Is there anyone lurking who is planning to apply to the 2011 program?
I have spent the last 12 years in financial marketing/communications and am excited to try and change paths into nursing. I am currently taking my prerequisite courses at city college- stats and anatomy/physiology- and going in for the GRE Saturday. I'm volunteering at a children's hospital, which is causing me to consider the pediatric nurse practitioner track... I know UCSF is very competitive and it's a long-shot for someone like me to get in, but I feel like I have to try! If it doesn't happen next year, then I'll just keep building my volunteer experience and re-apply. Also on my mind is that if for some miracle I were to get in how I would pay for it.
But enough about me... what are some other candidates' takes on preperation, interests, anxieties, etc?
Hey Goguemah-
Have you heard of a lot of other UCSD folks applying as well? Doesn't surprise me since UCSF is so close and so amazing =) Also, many are probably comfortable with the UC system having mastered it in undergrad. Most of the other schools I am applying to are far away on the East coast - I say that like it's another dimension =0. When I researched accelerated MSN programs with a mental health specialty, I didn't find many local ones besides UCSF, CSLA, and OHSU (not really that close, but beats the East coast!).
Sorry that you didn't get an interview your 1st time, but I'm sure you have been preparing for the 2nd time around and I wish you the best of luck! Did UCSF tell you why they didn't grant you an interview? I'm nervous because I know how great their program is and I know many of the applicants will have stellar qualifications, somewith PhDs, international volunteer experience, etc. If I don't get into UCSF, I will be forced to move to the East coast most likely =( All of my friends and family ar ehere so I would rather not, but I would for a good program. I have an interview with the University of Rochester in a couple weeks and by then I don't think I will have even heard anything from UCSF!
Tanya
Tanya- Wow that is really impressive! I think you have a really good chance with UCSF! I have done several volunteer/research activities in mental health as well as other fields such as cardiovascular disease, surgery, and internal medicine. I have done quite a few different internships in the mental health/psych field, both working with psychologically/emotionally disturbed children, as well as elderly and adults with severe psychiatric disorders. Unfortunately, I have not been too involved with volunteering and research since graduating in 2008 since I have had to work full time while attending school. There are just simply not enough hours in the day! UCSF has such an attractive program and there are so many overly qualified people applying, I just hope I get an interview, and if I do not, I will definitely apply next year! Good luck and keep me posted!
Hi my fellow applicants! I have a quick question regarding the academic calendar for the 2011 MEPN program. I see on UCSF's website that the summer 2011 semester starts on 6/11/11 - does anyone know whether we would have obligations such as orientations before that? Anyone from past years have insight as to the general schedule of the start of the program? I'm making plans for Memorial Day weekend and don't want to mess things up on the small chance I actually make it into the program. Thanks for your help!
well i can tell you that i called UCSF yesterday to see about submitting a recently-received CNA certification to my file and was abruptly informed that 'no one would be going to my file again for any more information about me before the next step'... so they must be in the final stages of picking interviews. i didn't ask whether my file had a good stamp on the front, or a bad stamp. i felt like i heard an air of 'nope' in his voice. oh well! :) we do find out soon!!
So the days we've waited for are finally upon us. I'm sorry for those who didn't get the news they wanted--this is such a gut-wrenching experience for all of us! I have been checking my mailbox frantically since Dec 2. I live in the East Bay, so I suspect I'll get my answer Monday (sigh.)
I'm curious, has the status of anyone's application changed? I recall from last year's thread that those who didn't get interviews also saw their application status change from "under review" to "denied" or something to that effect. Maybe that happens later. I'm just trying to keep myself together for the next few days. . .
Best of luck to everyone!

Hey Tanya! I guess a lot of UCSD are applying to UCSF! =) I also graduated from UCSD 2 years ago with B.S. in Human Biology. This is my second time applying to UCSF (first time as Geriatric and now as FNP track) and first time I didn't even get an interview...=( However, I am keeping my hopes up this year cuz I hear that there is a higher chance of getting in as a reapplicant. Hope we all get the interview on Dec! we gotta show our UCSD pride haha.
