2011 UCSF MEPN Applicants

Published

Hi,

Is there anyone lurking who is planning to apply to the 2011 program?

I have spent the last 12 years in financial marketing/communications and am excited to try and change paths into nursing. I am currently taking my prerequisite courses at city college- stats and anatomy/physiology- and going in for the GRE Saturday. I'm volunteering at a children's hospital, which is causing me to consider the pediatric nurse practitioner track... I know UCSF is very competitive and it's a long-shot for someone like me to get in, but I feel like I have to try! If it doesn't happen next year, then I'll just keep building my volunteer experience and re-apply. Also on my mind is that if for some miracle I were to get in how I would pay for it.

But enough about me... what are some other candidates' takes on preperation, interests, anxieties, etc?

Hi everyone! I just wanted to chime in again now that all the stress of finishing the application is done with, and say a BIG thanks to czyja and everyone else who had useful information to share. I definitely feel that your advice helped tremendously, and it really helped to clear up a lot of questions that I had and I'm sure lots of other people had too. If this forum was not here, I think my application and my sense of hope would have been considerably worse. And thank you czyja for taking so much time to reply to our questions, it is invaluable to have someone with your first hand experience here to help :) Hopefully some of us can continue the favor next year!

When do we hear back from UCSF?

I don't think interviews are announced until December...Maybe someone else remembers better?

Unfortunately I think you are right :( We have a long time to wait.....

Where else is everyone applying for their specialties?

When do we hear back from UCSF?

According to the UCSF website, "Interviews are typically scheduled towards the end of January." I don't know if that means that's when we would hear from them, or if they've contacted people a couple of weeks ahead of that and said, "why don't you come out toward the end of January?"

When I was invited to interview a few years ago, the letters were sent in the latter part of December (a week or so before Christmas) and the interviews were scheduled for the end of January. The following year, my "no thanks" letter came about the same time in December. So, unless things have changed drastically, check your mailboxes starting in mid-December :-)

Hi everyone. Good to know I'm not the only one who is anxious! I just checked on my application online and it still states "Under Review" but it also notes the schools that they received transcripts from, confirmation of letters of rec received, and GRE scores received.

I heard from someone I know at UCSF that they received over 600 applications (for 80 slots, yikes) - so it will take a while for them to sort and review all of them. Everyone here is correct, we should get contacted in December about interviews. Good luck on making it through the wait - and everything else!

You should also check out OHSU for their Nurse-Midwifery Program. It's currently ranked #1 and a very good program!

Hello,

Has anyone seen the status on his/her application change from "under review" to "ready for review"? According to the website the status changes about 3 weeks after the application deadline.

The status on my application has not changed, and I wanted to check with all of you to see if others were experiencing the same.

Thank you! Best luck to all of us!

If I remember correctly from last year's application, it stays "under review" until we get a rejection or interview invitation letter. I actually didn't ever get a hard copy letter, but found out on this board that people were getting their hard copy invitation letters in the mail. I found out from someone in this forum that we had to log in and there was a link on our app page that allowed you to download your letter. Just goes to show how helpful these forums are!

Hoping for the best for everyone! :-)

I have a quick prerequisite question that I thought people on this thread might know the answer to:

I am planning on applying to the MEPN program next year and just started my remaining prereqs (A&P and microbiology - micro's for Columbia's ETP). I am doing this online through the University of Rochester's School of Nursing because I live in southwest China where I have zero options to take these courses at a bricks-and-mortar school before possibly starting the program in 2012.

I *just* noticed on the UCSF website that they say that taking A&P together (the way I'm doing it, A&P I and then A&P II) is not as rigorous as taking them separately and make not be acceptable for admission. They don't say anything about a required lab component, nor anything about taking courses online. They say that they themselves can't assess specific courses for acceptability, and that you should ask the faculty teaching the A&P course if it is sufficiently rigorous (how would faculty at a different school even know that?!!).

In short: does anyone know if doing the A&P prereqs this way is acceptable for admission to the MEPN program?

Thanks!!

I don't know about online courses but I do know that you can take both A&P together rather than as separate classes. I might contact the school to find out about acceptance for online programs. Good luck!!
