2011 UCSF MEPN Applicants

Published

Hi,

Is there anyone lurking who is planning to apply to the 2011 program?

I have spent the last 12 years in financial marketing/communications and am excited to try and change paths into nursing. I am currently taking my prerequisite courses at city college- stats and anatomy/physiology- and going in for the GRE Saturday. I'm volunteering at a children's hospital, which is causing me to consider the pediatric nurse practitioner track... I know UCSF is very competitive and it's a long-shot for someone like me to get in, but I feel like I have to try! If it doesn't happen next year, then I'll just keep building my volunteer experience and re-apply. Also on my mind is that if for some miracle I were to get in how I would pay for it.

But enough about me... what are some other candidates' takes on preperation, interests, anxieties, etc?

The personal history. The goal statement is 2 pages

Just wondering ... (I'm still making edits to my goal statement) if anyone has a statement that's like 1.5 pages instead of 2 or more. Does anyone know if they look down on statements that are this short?

ignore that question -- I'm back at 2 :)

Just locked! Good luck everybody!!

Just locked mine too!! OMG, so glad to be done with this app!

Good luck everyone!

actually 1% seems totally believable...sadly... :/

Do not let the low acceptance rate discourage you. The percentage does not tell the whole story. Many of the application they get are crap. Many are good. And only a few make the cut - hopefully it will be yours.

I think midwifery is very, very competitive no matter where one applies. I know some people people in the program and I can say that it is by far the most demanding of the specialities in terms of training. So I think they screen applicants very carefully. The program is tough, as it should be. And there seems to be a difficult acculturation period for some students.

I wonder how many guys get accepted to UCSF MEPN each year. I only see a handful of male students in the pix posted on the MEPN 2010 webiste, and they all look pretty old..(like 30ish), which makes me think that they must have a lot of experience. Anyways does anyone know if UCSF is looking to recruit more male students in their nursing programs?

just submitted - whew! good luck everyone! :)

czya-- good point... the good thing about the competitiveness is that I know, when I do eventually get in to the program, I will be working alongside some really amazing people who want to be there just as much as I do -- I can't imagine anything better than working within an environment where everyone is 100% passionate about and dedicated to doing the work that they do; I feel very fortunate (in advance lol). I have actually met a couple other midwifery mepn applicants and they are definitely movers-and-shakers; I told them we might end up in the same class in 2020 :)

PHEW!...and the waiting game begins! ahh this is going to be a very looong few months! good luck everyone! :)

Hah! If 30 is "pretty old' then Czya should be dead by now, at age 45.:D

There were 10 men in my class, plus one more when we finished the year as one of us was transitioning into manhood during the year. (As an aside, UCSF is a LGBTQ friendly school) if my ancient memory serves me. I think 3 or 4 were in there twenties, 3 or four in their 30s, 2 of us are 45, and one is in his 50s.

Yes, they want men. I dont think they will admit it in public but I am pretty confident that applications from men recieve the higher level of care afforded to applications from under-represented minorities

I think nursing is still not very attractive to many men. We all had to work through some gender issues before we decided to become nurses. ie You have to be think through what it means to be enter a female dominated profession and decide whether it will work for you or not.

And fear not youngling, your day will come. I prophesie that one day you shall look into the mirror and be utterly shocked at the face staring back at you.

The wait is tortuous. It was one of longest periods in my life. Seconed only by the wait between interview day and an acceptance letter. Try to stay calm. I found that making a back plan greatly relieved the anxiety. Good luck

thanks czyja! it's always calming hearing from someone who's experienced and been through the program already. your advice has helped tremendously through this process!
