I am moving to San Diego and am looking at these hospitals. If anyone has any info I would apprec it. It looks like ucsd has best benefit package but I have only looked at their websites on line . Any info will be so helpful and I will be happy to use you as a referral if I go to work at your facility. Feel free to PM me with info or post here.

Thanks so much!!

Hi, I am moving to San Diego as well. I am looking at Scripps, Sharp, and UCSD. Hopefully someone in the area will respond to this thread. Good luck with your move!!

Hi rnduke!

Guess no one on the boards is in San Diego. Would love to compare notes. Have you talked to any nurse recruiters?

My best friend lives there and is a RN. She works at Balboa Naval Medical Center. However, everyone I have spoken to says Scripps is the best place to work. I guess we will see! I want to check out a couple of the hospitals and maybe a clinic?

i work for SHARP, but not as a nurse. i work in the admin offices. a friend works at SHARP memorial as a nurse & LOVES it & my uncle works at memorial as a respiratory therapist & loves it as well. if i decide to stay in san diego after graduation, i'll definitely want to work at SHARP, but i HAVE heard that scripps pays more. good luck on your search!

I live in TX now but I am a native San Diegan. I worked at Scripps and did RN training at all of the area hospitals and have friends who work at all of them. What kind of nursing do you do and what are your specific questions?

I am looking to move to La Jolla in the next few months, so i am glad to know best hospitals for med-surg RN. Anyone know how rate of pay compares to LA?

Happynursy,

The pay in SD is just like anywhere else, it depends on your experience and where you work. If you are moving to La Jolla, look into Scripps. They have two hospitals in the La Jolla area. Also, look at UCSD, they have a hospital there as well. There is also a VA Hospital, not sure how you go about getting a job there but they are in La Jolla as well. I've done clinicals at the VA and will be doing my last semester at Scripps La Jolla as well as my preceptorship. New grad pay in SD is around $25-27/hr. Not sure what the pay is in LA.

San Diego pays less than LA, as well as less than anywhere in the OC. We don't have that good of pay here, especially taking into account the extremely high cost of living! The stock quote is: "we don't have to pay that competitively b/c everyone wants to live here....".

You don't see that much of a shortage of nurses here....lots of nurses come here on travel assignments and of course w/the military presence there are tons of nurses coming and going, then add in the new grads, nurses already living here, nurses moving here.....you get the picture.

I am a travel nurse and have been in san diego for almost a year. I worked for scripps in chula vista and hated it but I heard good things about scripps green and lajolla. I worked at USCD Thornton hospital in Lajolla and didnt like that either. Snoody pt's and uptight nurses. Right now I work at USCD in hillcrest and LOVE it. I never worked for a teaching hospital but I wouldn't trade it for the world. I guess the benefits are good because A lot of people I work with travel pretty far to get them. So in my favor I would reccomend USCD hillcrest. Hope that helps!!
