Is anyone applying to the Fall 2012 program ? I have a few questions and I think it would be good to share our concerns regarding the application process here.
I am a preschool teacher and I am applying for 2012. Have very little healthcare volunteer experience and wondering if that really maters. I have some experience looking after a family member who had a stomach surgery and chemo.
Hello future classmates. I too will be joining everyone in the Fall...YIPEEEEE
I'm dabating whether to take the BYU online course (which would save me several hundreds of dollars) or the regular class course. I've never taken an online course before so I'm kind of leery
@AuntySam
How is your BYU course, specifically. I know for Epidemolgy everything is multiple choice. What about nutrition...if so, are the assignments and exams pretty much on topic with the reading? Do you find it overwhelming/challenging? Is it what you expected...
I also called a couple of the proctor sights and they told me it was $35-50/hour not each exam. So your info is much better!
Also, is it at your own pace...I'm not really clear on that as of yet.
Thanks
Oh awesome, thanks so much amfo for the info!! And that sounds like a great idea AuntySam, I think it would be really fun to meet up for all of us for lunch or something. We can get some more time to get to know each other before the craziness begins! I am so excited to meet and get to know all of you!!! Congrats gstell! :)
@gstell
My Nutrition class had 15 speedback assessments. Each assessment had about 40 multiple choice questions and I submitted each one at the end of every chapter. I took the assessment online and received immediate feedback. I also had 4 instructor graded assignments, which were project based worksheets that I needed to submit at different times throughout the course. I had to make sure that I gave ample time for the instructor to grade each assignment and then, I was told I could move on to the next chapter. Additionally, I took two midterm exams (about 110 questions each) and final exam (about 140 questions – I actually need to take next week).
The questions on the exams have been very consistent with the reading assignments and speedback assessments. This instructor provided midterm studyguides, so that helped.
I think this is a great course if you are unable to enroll at a local college, don’t want to drive to class, or if you want to save money (compared to UCLA’s tuition). The set-up is nice in that, it’s completely at your pace…well, if that’s what you want. However, it’s tricky in that you have to be extremely disciplined. You have to submit your assignments and take your exams timely to allow ample time for processing. For example, you have to request for an exam to be mailed to the proctor, then you make time to go take the exam, then the proctor needs to mail the exam back to BYU. Every class is slightly different. I’m not sure if your instructor will allow you to move on to the next chapter assignment before the exam is graded or you might need to wait. Although that doesn’t mean that you can’t get started on reading the next chapter.
Another thing I noticed is that when you have questions, you have to email the BYU Independent Studies Office. Then the office will forward your email to the instructor. The instructor replies to BYU Independent Studies, then they forward the email to you. So the process could take at least an extra 2 or 3 days depending on how quickly the Independent Studies Office forwards the email. I haven’t had the need to ask, but I thought that I would be allowed to speak with the instructor or the TA over the phone and have a good student/instructor relationship. But I was not given that option. So, if you have specific questions about concepts, you should know that it may take a bit to get your answers, and opportunities to speak over the phone may not be readily available.
Personally, I prefer online courses that are structured with discussion boards and weekly deadlines to guarantee completion in one semester. With BYU IS, you are given a whole year to complete the coursework. So if you need to finish the course in just a few months, make sure to create your own syllabus at the beginning and stick to it.
I did my undergrad at BYU actually. Enjoyed my experience very much. The Independent Study program is a great option, and you can feel good about the course being offered by an accredited and well respected university. I know many educators and even homeschooling parents that use the BYU IS program. Had it not been for this program, I would not have been able to take this course, which is a prerequisite for several other nursing schools that I have applied to. I'm actually completing this course in a matter of two months (to give you an idea of the possibility to complete a course fairly quickly).
I hope this helps. Please let me know if you need any clarification. :)

and anyone else interested in meeting up sometime ...
I created an email address. Send me an email, and I'll introduce myself. I'll also start a list of those of us interested in meeting up and perhaps we can meet sometime in May. Once in LA and once in Orange County.
send email to [email protected]
Doglovers :) that have sent me a private message about possibly rooming together...I responded to your messages, but not sure if you received them successfully. I'm not sure if I can even respond without having posted at least 15 times on this main page. Feel free to send me another private message (because I can at least read them) or send me an email at [email protected]
thanks so much for the detailed response.you cleared up a lot of my questions.
wow...you did your undergrad all online. you are extremely focused. personally, i thinkonline is harder than traditional school due to the fact of self motivation anddiscipline.
i know i'm disciplined enough...its just sometimes online courses require unnecessarywork. since we are going to be working crazy for the next couple of years. iwould like to enjoy my last days on sanity!
i'm going to email you at the gmail account... i would like to know whatproctor sights you used.
thanks again!
Hi gstell,
haha. I did not do all of my undergrad all online. BYU's main campus is out in Utah. I was on campus, out in Utah for my undergraduate studies.
I cannot imagine earning an entire degree through Independent Studies. You do have to be super disciplined. And I don't think I am THAT disciplined. haha. Plus, I really value face-to -face interaction. I think the option to earn an entire degree online or through Independent Studies is a great opportunity for those who otherwise may not be able to pursue higher education, ie full-time stay-at-home parents, caretaker of an ill family member, no car, living in rural areas.
Even for Nursing, I think there are some online schools - a good fit for some people, but not a good fit for others.
Yes, send me an email, and let's "talk." :)

Oh and I checked with the School of Nursing earlier this week and was informed that the Graduate Division will send us emails shortly. So they're coming. You're not the only one that haven't received it yet.
