Is anyone applying to the Fall 2012 program ? I have a few questions and I think it would be good to share our concerns regarding the application process here.
I am a preschool teacher and I am applying for 2012. Have very little healthcare volunteer experience and wondering if that really maters. I have some experience looking after a family member who had a stomach surgery and chemo.
Hello everyone!
Congrats to all who got accepted to UCLA and wish you good luck in your studying!
I was wondering if there is anyone who got accepted to other Entry Level MSN programs but made decision to UCLA. Can you tell me why? I am hugely debating on choosing UCLA vs one other school and it is really hard to choose one...Please help me out with it.
Thanks!
I totally understand how you feel ljy1987. I was very torn as well, but I did what I felt aligned best with what I wanted and valued. I was accepted to ucla and another 4 yr FNP program, but decided to go with UCLA. For me, it boiled down to UCLA's philosophy on health which aligns with mine and second, that I know I would be taught well from the faculty. I personally absolutely loved the idea of having the "fastest" route to becoming a FNP, because I LOVE that role so much. But I think having a solid RN foundation would make me a better FNP. I am also VERY much interested in nursing theory, research and how our approach to care can be (and will be) the game-changer of healthcare starting with the CNL role. I know ucla does a lot of research for the profession, and I am very excited/interested to learn about it directly from them.
So there's my train of thought in a nutshell. All I can say is that you have to look at what's important to you. Its definitely the only way I was able to make a decision! I totally understand how you feel, it is tough.
Best of luck!!!!
Hi everyone,I decided to take the BYU Independent study class so I could still work during the Summer. I was wondering, is anyone in the Los Angeles area taking this class that would like to get a study group together to help each other stay on track? I can't send private messages yet but hopefully I can message them, otherwise I'll try to set up a Facebook group for us soon.
See you!!
kgroundw, I too decided to take the BYU and I would love to join a study group. It will be great to have the support.... I will try to send you a private message.
Heya KASSACH and kgroundw, I am also enrolling in the BYU Epi class (and sincere thanks, again, for directing me to that class). I'd love to get involved with any online study group as well, but do not intend to start the course work until late April...Look forward to working with everyone and wishing you all the best!
When is the deadline to sign up for the BYU class? I am coming from out of state to visit UCLA on the 21st of this month and won't know for sure if I will choose UCLA or another program until then. Also, are there any tours of the nursing facilities or do any of you know how to set that up? Maybe it just makes more sense for me to wander around and see things myself... I would really love to talk to someone- or multiple people- currently in the program as well as meet any available faculty. I am so confused about what to do right now and am hoping that my visit will clear everything up!
For those in the program (or those of you who feel like you have a good grasp on this) what does it really mean to have a CNL degree? Is it more administrative and less directed at hands on patient care? From some of the descriptions I have read, I get the feeling that it is more about learning how to manage nurse teams and not learning how to be an RN in the traditional sense.... I am fairly certain I want to go into maternity care and I just want to make sure that this degree is still appropriate for that.
Any input is much appreciated :)
Yeah, I stumbled upon and realized that there are actually two epidemiology courses offered through ucla. One is through the Epidemiology dept itself (Epi 100A) and the other is through the nursing dept Nursing 50 (which they recommend, of course). Epi 100 is 5:30-9pm and nursing 50 is 9:30am-11:50am, both are Tuesday/Thursday and it starts June 26th. On the SON website, it lists both of these as approved courses, so by that I am guessing you can take either. I have signed up for the Nursing 50 the timing seems to work better with my work schedule and I am driving up from OC. It seems as though you are fine if the evening time works better for you. Here is the link for the Epidemiology course list. http://nursing.ucla.edu/workfiles/PREERQUISITE%20COURSES/ApprovedMECNEpidemiologyCourses.pdf
Hope this helps! :)And someone please correct me if I am wrong here!
Congrats to you as well. I was in the same boat...straddling between the choice of 2 different programs. I actually interviewed current students in both programs and I was able to find a student who graduated from UCLAs program (2010) that ultimately swayed my decision. We can chat about it on the phone if you'd like.
